In a cutting-edge twist, police in Udon Thani harnessed AI technology to track down a deadly hit-and-run driver. After two tragic deaths on 6th July, a crucial vehicle part was found at the scene. Investigators at Kumphawapi police station enlisted ChatGPT to identify the part.

Security footage showed the suspect vehicle speeding away, but a small auto piece held the key. ChatGPT analysed the photo of the part, identifying it as a "front bumper upper reinforcement" from a Toyota Hilux Vigo Champ, 2011-2015 model, with part number 52113-0K140. This pinpointed search enabled the police to narrow down their investigation significantly.

Armed with this AI-assisted insight, police revisited the surveillance tapes and successfully identified the fleeing vehicle and apprehended the driver. News of the AI's role spread quickly after an investigator shared the breakthrough on Facebook, capturing public admiration for the innovative police work.

While the specific details of the case remain under wraps, the success story highlights a new era in crime-solving techniques. As AI becomes a more prominent tool in law enforcement, this case may pave the way for other investigations.

Hat's off for this collar   👏

I just googled the part number. It's the very first item in the search results.

555 Baht on Lazada.

My interpretation of the story is that AI was used to visually identify the part, thus providing the part number.  Google Lens does this type of function, and uses AI visual matching logic.

So instead of identifying directly the vehicle itself, used AI to identify small part of the vehicle.

How is that efficient?

Maybe their surveillance tapes didn't cover the actual accident scene, but showed multiple vehicles that could have been involved. By identifying this part, they narrowed it down to the vehicle type, then by going back to the surveillance tapes, they got the vehicle's registration number.
