What Would Make You Leave Thailand, Permanently?

Featured Replies

I lived in Surin and Bangkok for a total of 12 years and watched the country change in so many ways and not for the better in many ways. Went to Phnom Penh for a week, back to Bangkok for 2 weeks to pack up and relocated to Cambodia.
Best move I’ve made, for me it’s just much better and I haven’t seen any murders, assaults, stabbings or bag and phone snatches like the BS internet stories promote. It’s a fantastic country. Thailand for expats is quickly becoming paradise lost.

If permanent means live some means live some else full time, I already have left. Great for tourists, less so for single retirees

But I’ve always wondered, what would actually be a game changer that makes someone up and leave after so many years of living in Thailand?

I moved to live in Thailand at a relatively young age. Dabbling in financial markets, I experienced roller-coaster rides... If I ever gambled my life-savings away, that would obviously be a major reason. Others are sickness, or old age... (I don't intent to get old in Thailand, but I may still visit from time to time.)

Also, after many years, Thailand is not longer an 'exotic' country to me, so, yes, with many alternatives, I may go and discover new places when being retired.

Thank you for your inspiring post. Can you explain a little why you find it better?

Would you settle on a bulldog fart in an elevator?

The main reason for leaving Thailand for good, I divorce my wife.

Nah, you would stay and try and get a new one.

You might, but I'm already back in Norway

For a small thai farang family in south Thailand you need that figure already too lol, if wanting to live decently and save up for the future too…

But with that figure one can live anywhere. A cheesy old 2 br bungalow costs me 1100$ here.

I live on the pension in OZ. I pay only 480 AUD per fortnight for a 2-bedroom unit. I lived in Thailand for many years, but moved back some years ago, and had nothing to move back to, but having a ball now.

Great. So you already left. I might what? I don't do wives. That's for amateurs.

The main factor is money. I'm only speaking for the US where if you sold your home and don't have family to stay with, repatriating will require a solid monthly income. If rent is say $1500/mo then the landlords are going to want to see at least $5K/mo income.

You would have to move to a smaller town, someplace rural, or someplace like Little Rock, or Detroit to find a decent place for $1500 anymore. And the other costs of living are now astronomical. The US is not an option. It represents a very low quality of life, for all who don't own a nice home which is fully paid for.

Not completely, we will live both places, but prioritizing Norway for awhile because of family reasons and also establish a second base.

You Nick kind of gives away a hint, so no surprise.

Marriage the best thing that happened to me in my life, what your reasons for choosing dying alone, can we only speculating about.

Wait till he comes disabled and has nobody to help him. I have been married twice for 30 years, to a Western lady and 20 years to a Thai lady, and I could not do without help now.

Dying alone is the most peaceful thing. Who could ever ask for a greater blessing.

Wait and see 🙈

Where your friends is when you get older.

No problem if you are friendly and have money, you can do as everyone else do when they starting to cripple, rent a young nurse to change your diapers

Agree absolutely, I could not do without my wife taking me shopping or any other activities

That sounds pretty kinky. Now you got me asking myself why I'm not already doing that now. It would be a shame to wait so long for that level of satisfying filth.

I'm still young, or at least younger than most here, and it is not what I'm thinking about now primary.

Having someone who contribute positive to your life, is a blessing, and also have someone to plan the future with, done you care for, is something great. Especially if you feel it is returned

I see your problem, no need to explain

Sad. Cant get around on your own anymore?

As I do yours

I do not think so, I have no problems, you can claim I have but there is no problem. I'm a grown up, who takes responsibility for my actions and do what I want, and I work for it.
