2025 Experience of renewing 5 year car license and 5 year motor license at Chatuchak Bangkok

The expiry date of my motorcycle license and car license have a two year gap between them. Motorcycle license has expired 1.5 years ago. Car license is about to expire this year. Today I tried to get them both renewed at the same time:

  1. Arrived at building 4 of DLT Chatuchak with the following:

           A. Original certificate of residence from ChaengWattana immigration (200B)

           B. Original health certificate from a clinic (150B)

           C. Passport photo page and visa page copy

           D. QR code from the online training

I have a second set of the above except A. And B. are photocopies hoping they will be accepted for the Moto license.

  1. At building 4, you will find the special foreigner zone to your right immediately after the entrance. Took a queue and called to counter 4.
  2. After reviewing my documents, the friendly staff said that I cannot renew my motorcycle license because the certificate of residence is written to be for car license renewal only. I will have to get a second letter from immigration.
  3. She suggests that I come back with this so I can renew both at the same time. If I were to do so, the expiry date of both licenses will be in sync to expire 5 years from now. The motorcycle license renewal will require a 2 hours sit in course at 8am the day I come in.
  4. Alternatively I can choose to not renew the motorcycle license and just go ahead and book a time slot two days from now to renew just the car license. No videos needed and I can come in, in the afternoon. Time slots 1pm and 2pm available.

In the past, I used a certificate of residence from my Embassy instead of from immigration. The difference is the one from the embassy can be photocopied and used for both car and Moto as it is not written on the letter what it is for. The one from immigration does, so it is necessary to pay for two certificates (200B x 2)

Worth following the officers advice and getting the other certificate while it's still very easy to do the renewal. Recent announcements from DLT suggest that in the near future it might be a requirement to do full written and practical tests when applying for a new licence.

In that case , it's a crossover to this thread :

No drivers license ? I'm out.

The full written is on a computer with all dodgy answers to badly translated questions.

When dealing with any kind of government don't expect wisdom. Canada is just as bad ,my old lady has to have her fingerprints taken again because the ones they took last year expired.

Only if you not had a Driver License before, that does not apply for renewals.

The OP mentions the motorcycle licence expired 1½ years ago, so while the car licence is still valid the motorcycle one isn't and would not be treated as a renewal. But at the current time the DLT should process it alongside the car licence without requiring a test.
