Forum Rats and Keyboard Warriors: What’s Really Going On Here?

Featured Replies

If you’re spending more than half your waking hours lurking, refreshing, and posting on this site, what does that actually say about you?

Maybe it’s boredom. Maybe it’s just too much free time. Or maybe it’s something deeper, like a quiet addiction to the forum world where arguing with strangers and chasing validation in the form of likes, dislikes, and dopamine-drip replies becomes the daily ritual.

There are a few common breeds of heavy posters I've noticed. Some treat the forum like a personal diary, narrating every tedious detail of their day. Others seem to think they’ve been knighted as moral overseers of Thailand, issuing sweeping declarations on immigration, banking, language, food or how to “do it right.” Then there are the moaners, the whingers, the local experts, the self-appointed cultural interpreters, and of course the contrarians who will argue against gravity just to get a rise.

Different styles, same pattern: too much time on their hands and a need to feel heard. For many, the forum seems to have become a digital pub, a place to hold court, vent, swap tall tales, or just feel slightly less invisible in the long blur of retirement or midlife drift.

It’s easy to laugh at it, but it also points to something real. Maybe, for all the sunshine and cheap beer, quite a few guys out here are still looking for purpose, routine, or connection, even if it’s in yet another circular thread about female relationships or your latest shopping trip to Makro.

So is it a harmless time-waster, or does it point to something deeper? Either way, if you find yourself posting more than living, it might be time to log off and walk outside. There’s still a real Thailand out there, beyond the reply button.

Ha made me laugh, and will no doubt touch a few nerves.

The reality is some are far too into a rut now to get out of it, pretty much just waiting to die. So much for living the dream lol.

Once you've had enough Leo, why not move over to Chang and keep the party going?

Stuck in Thailand? "Pretty much waiting to die"

Huh? What? The old saying is we all make the beds we sleep in. If the above sentence is you, you (not you personally SIT) are only to blame.

I spend about 30 minutes a week on this forum as I have been traveling to Thailand since the early 90's, lived there for over a decade, so it's it's informative for me as to whats happening.

Keyboard warriors do abound, the MAGA crew on political soapbox sticking up for their guy seem to be spending a lot of time there.............one guy in Isaan huge keyboard warrior, but you know, he lives in Isaan, enough said there.

Well put. Particularly about the politically obsessed and those bored to tears in Isaan.

I 'live' in Isaan now, also spent years 'living' in Bangkok and Pattaya, but at the end of the day it's all pretty much the same deal, and if I go on a trip to BKK or 'Patts' now I'm pleased to get out and back up here if I'm honest. But guess what, this has all been discussed thousands of times. The whole country is a bore fest and when I do eventually leave I won't be looking back for a single second at people still here with <deleted> all to do all day.

I actually would not call people out here for being very active on the site.  There are probably more then a few people here that have disabilities or are otherwise not above to get out much.  This site is a little conduit to others and a sense of purpose.  I say let them be.

I will end up blowing too much money if I go out too much.

I deliberately stay in more to keep myself from blowing my budget.

So I spend a lot of time online, and have the AN tab open.

You forgot to add which one you are? AS i see it you seem to make quite a few posts almost daily and comment very often on other people as well. So, it begs to ask which of these you listed have you become?

It says I'm too old to do much anymore, what do you expect people 70+ to do all day?

I remember my gran used to sit knitting all day, every day, but no internet back then.

It's a way to talk to farangs without personal contact. I just pick the brains of people without them knowing it.

Aren't you supposed to be ogling young tarts saying you wished you were young again? I thought that was what all old people do?

You forgot the ones who judge and categorize the different kinds of posters. They seem to appear frequently, often as relatively new members who haven't a clue what's going on but feel compelled to comment.

Most AN posters are older retirees. Lots of time on our hands to do whatever interests us in whichever venue suits our needs. For many, getting out and about is physically difficult, especially during the Rainy Season.

Please tell us what is wrong with them spending more time socializing on line than sitting alone in their rooms.

Nothing wrong with anything if nobody gets harmed.

Hadn't been to Pattaya in a long while, decided to detour there on a trip back from Cambodia.  Just riding into town on the minbus, looking out the window it hit me: "what the hell were you thinking?"

There was a Chinese tour bus on Beach Road once.

Some old Chinese ladies were staring at the freelancers from the bus and pointing and giggling.

You should join one of those bus tours.
