In the early hours today, police in Phuket cracked down on street racing, detaining 18 underage individuals and seizing 14 modified motorbikes in the Laem Dinso area of Wichit.

The operation, led by Wichit Police Station under Police Colonel Somsak Thongkliang, commenced at 1:30 am after continuing complaints about nocturnal gatherings and illegal racing on Sakdidet Road and nearby areas.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Wutthawat Liangbunchinda, accompanied by Lieutenants Sawat Phon-on and Pinij Sritongsuk, spearheaded the patrol that intercepted the teenagers, all under the age of 18. The vehicles were taken for further examination.

The youths tried to stash their altered bikes in roadside grass but were unsuccessful. All 14 motorbikes were found and confiscated by the police.

Colonel Somsak indicated that the parents or guardians of the minors involved would be called and potentially charged under the Child Protection Act B.E. 2546. Authorities are examining the possibility of prosecuting under Section 26 (2), which prohibits parental encouragement or consent to behaviours that risk children’s safety.

“This behaviour not only disrupts the community but also endangers young people,” stated Colonel Somsak. “Parents must be responsible. If they allow or fail to prevent these risky activities, they may be held accountable under the law.”

Those detained were taken to Wichit Police Station, with further operations planned to tackle illegal street racing and maintain public safety. This crackdown serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced in addressing juvenile delinquency and community safety in Phuket.

For parents, there may be consequences not just for the involved youths but also for those who knowingly permit such activities. Authorities emphasise the importance of parental vigilance and responsibility in curbing these activities that threaten both public peace and the safety of young individuals.

As the situation unfolds, police remain committed to eradicating illegal street racing in Wichit and ensuring the peace and safety of its residents, firmly maintaining that public security is paramount.

The community awaits further developments and continues to hope for sustained measures that will effectively address and mitigate these disruptions.
