Expat Discontent in Thailand

TH is just a location, and they'd be miserable no matter where they live.  Simply because that's who they are, or they make the same bad choices over & over.   Oh well ... :coffee1:

I am unhappy with both Thailand and Cambodia, more so with Thailand because Cambodia is just emerging and Thailand should have learned from their mistakes in the page.

With all due respect to Thailand, they havent had "stability" in their society and government for many years. Problems get bandaids. Other problems get ignored, or handled by means  all out of proportion to the problem. Factions keep fighting for their own packets. Meanwhile, the environment gets more degraded, the air worse, the discontent more obvious and the charm erased. You can walk down a street and choking smog in Bangkok and not find a Gai Yang vendor, but there are western chain stores. Plus visas are annoying

Other than Siem Reap, Cambodia is a primitive oligarchichal chinese criminal run shi*thole, that quite frankly the world, meaning us and the French, should completely rebuild as payback. But Siem Reap itself is a taste of Asia as it was, a Disneyland with better air and a govt oblivious to barang so to speak, with the benefit of all the goodies from Thailand and easy, cheap travel to the steaming fleshpots of Soi Nana.

No more. Lets start a war over ruins and drive 100,000 plus jungle grubbers on both sides into camps. Like WTF? These people are all ethnically connected, live in tin shacks, eat bugs and now you are gonna blast 7-11s with crap Chinese artillery or send OUR F*IN Planes to cluster bomb the jungle?

For what? Dont explain it. The entire elected hierarchy of both countries should be taken out to the woodshed and biatch whipped with their pants down like sexually ambivalent Eton schoolboys, then forced to cough up their ill gotten gains to rebuild villiges in Surin and Preah Vihear. Build some nice roads for tourists too, instead of promoting over tourism with Russians on the Islands while they are at it.

My visa is up in 6 months. Who knows. Places like Batumi, the USVI, Greece, Puerto Rico, The Smokies, Las Vegas are all looking real good.

Where have you seen discontent with thais. ? Do you have an example?

Factors Contributing to Expat Discontent

Your problems contributing to discontent

1. Relationship Struggles
 Nah not really, got some once in a while like any relationship;

2. Scams and Dishonesty
    no scams for me.

3. Complex Immigration Requirements
No problems, company takes care of this

4. Imperfect Law Enforcement
   no issues

5. Past Misjudgments
 no issues

Why Bangkok and Pattaya Can Attract a Particular Demographic

Not my problem.

Should You Stay?

Start with learning the language of the country you are living in. Will solve a lot of things.

Things are only ever a problem if you allow them to be.

With all due respect, a bit of a generalisation that.

At worst it's new age new cage baloney.

If some sociopath / institution / govt system is imposing its will on me without my consent .... then I asked for it?

😂

It's that same 'all in your head' baloney. A 'blaming the victim' and 'it's all you' argument. It's annoying to hear that response for every problem.

Yep  - it's called gaslighting -  and the New Cage    I mean New Age   cult specialise in it.

I'm stuck with a Thai wife of 15yrs.

The phrase "stuck with" implies that you've got something you don't really want.

Perhaps your wife would be better off if you upped sticks and left, going somewhere you'll never find all those people you deem too 'low class' for your sensitivities.

BTW, I don't come into either of the two lists of 'undesirables' you've posted here. I doubt the majority of quiet, unobtrusive foreigners (a category you obviously don't fit into) in Thailand do either.

What list do you belong to?

Most importantly, my wife's list of 'People I want around me' and the list of 'Quiet, unobtrusive foreigners'.

Not interested in whether or not I'm on any other lists.

Can you tell us why?

Heart attacks, lung disease, aneurysms, and suicide. About 6 or 7 years ago I lost seven close friends in a 12-month stretch.

I wasn't bemoaning my fate, I was simply stating that life is short, and we have absolutely no idea when the Grim Reaper is going to be calling ,so we need to make make the most of every day .

you cut and paste that same post like at least 10 times on here. lol. it's ok.

Could be me posting about UK/Thailand, same feelings, same dead friends and relatives.

In the past 5 years almost everyone I ever knew has died, mostly in their mid 60s.

That's nice of you to be concerned but I'm 77 years old and certainly fitter than many men 20 years younger than me, a couple of months ago I climbed onto the roof of my house via the garden wall then onto the garage roof and then scrambled onto the roof from there in order to clean the rain gutters. I speak 3 languages and keep myself mentally fit by listening to podcasts on physics, archaeology,  spirituality etc.

Of course the end isn't too far away but I only need another 3 to 4 years to pay for the completion of my sons education, I'll be satisfied with that, as the Buddha said, 'All is impermanence, all arising is due to interdependence'. If I was 40 I would get further tests but at my age that would be undignified. The bow has been drawn tight and only the archer knows when he will release the arrow.

Similar to you.....but younger.

Just spent two days mowing the lawn, strimming the edges and trimming hedges....walk the dog for one or two hours a day......still teach occasionally......advanced Physics.

My MRI scan was for an auditory tumour.......the CSVD was discovered as a bi-product of the scan.......

As it happens I am now doing most of the things to combat it ......by pure chance.

BP generally 115/75, statins, omega 3 supplements, Mediterranean  diet-ish, reasonable weight and exercise.......it will do nothing for the damage that is already present and only limited impact on future damage.

I can already feel the effects starting and wish I had been more careful earlier in life.

I don't know how old you are but CSVD is quite common among older people, it's like my 20 year old car, some parts just break down with age. We all have a sell by date, that is nothing to fear. I won't let my mini stroke define me, I still smoke for instance, after 60 years of smoking I don't see a realistic prospect of giving it up. I don't drink, haven't done so for years, I only eat once a day. I take great interest in the Buddhist philosophy (I don't regard it as a religion) and in spirituality in general and often meditate (my wife says I'm the perfect candidate for a monastic life). My grandfather died after his second stroke in his 70's and my father died after his 3rd heart attack at 83 so I can see the path I am on.

Only after meditating on the Buddhist precepts of 'there is no you', 'the world is empty' and everything exists due to interdependent arising have I realized the great wisdom of his discourses.

I have a good life here. It's a question of mental attitude.

The only whinge I have is the Immigration rules. If one owns a condo here, or has a long-term lease, 90 day reporting is unnecessary. Retirees are not going to move.

IMO if I have stayed here for 5 years without getting into any legal trouble, I should be granted permanent residency. I am quite happy to continue paying 1900 baht, without all the BS paperwork.

FFS, retirees here are not going to become master criminals.

Get a LTR-WP visa issued by the BOI.

No 90 day reporting.  Once a year.  If you leave the country during the year and return the one year clock starts over.  No Re-Entry Permit.

Surely a highly educated man as yourself has enough assets to qualify.

My family mainly ignore everything outside their local environment.

Bangkok, politics, other countries, Trump, Ukraine, climate change not a part of their lives.

Same for me now, I only care about what happens around me.

Lol 5 years in Pattaya PR.... Delusional. Dream on. That will never, ever, ever happen. Just so you know

PR 10 years married, 15 for retired owning condo. 20 no condo.

Family...each child reduce 2 years

PR void living in Pattaya period or living in Phuket no condo

Five years is total noob, especially if Thailand only Asian country lived in and double especially if only Asian country traveled in for any extensive time

Why on earth do you think PR deserved for 5 years here ??🤣🤣

More importantly, what is the benefit of Permanent Resident in Thailand?

None that I can see except for those who, for some reason think it’s cool and makes them more “Thai like “.

Who gives a shi-.

All Thais (ok, 95%) are like that….LOL.

Nice, wealthy pensioners are few and far between on this forum, congrats!

Tired of paying near global prices, specially down south, while getting little to zero value and service in return. If the value and service were in order, no complaints. Also tired of the too high concentration of burmese workers (causing the service and value to go down even more aside from the increasing lack of the Thai culture and feeling that made it so nice here).

Once a year? Mine is every 5 years and 10 years issued at once.

Most of it is fake so we dont need to talk to idiots

Most is fake? I see more decent earning digital workers than retirees since over 6-7 years. Specially since covid and corporate pays way less decent expat packages for those working in multinationals and the like. Same a decrease in the rich oil workers etc.

Not everyone that sits with a laptop is a digital worker.

You have misunderstood my post.

The visa is good for 10 years.  Initial permission to stay is for 5 years.

One must report to the BOI once per year. No 90 days reporting.

If you depart and return during the year, the one year reporting clock starts over.

After the initial 5 years, one must resubmit the same qualifying paperwork to BOI for another 5 years permission to stay.

Difference is the second five years is FREE.
