Gavin Newsom floats November special election for his anti-Trump redistricting push

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday he will seek to call a November special election to have voters approve new House maps that boost Democrats.

By embracing a public vote, Newsom teed up a nationalized contest that opens a prominent front in national Democrats’ efforts to thwart President Donald Trump’s agenda. Newsom has vigorously embraced the party’s push to counter a GOP-friendly Texas gerrymander by buoying Democrats in blue states like California, arguing Trump has left the party no choice.

I'd guess that the odds of this happening are really low. The Dems are too much in touch with their female side to know how to fight.

Trump, Trump, Trump.

Hey Gavin, why don't you tell the voters how you plan to solve crime, the mass exodus from California, the poop on the street and your abysmal budget woes?

Give them something to vote FOR.

But you can't... All you have is Orange Man Bad.

But, you have a leader that is always in court, doesn't that send a message to the naughty folk that their leader is a felon, yabdabadooo, even pardons criminals that attacked the Capitol....🤔

Hilarious that Newsom is referring to anyone as authoritarian after his performance during COVID.

Anyway - this special election is designed to bypass the California Citizens Redistricting Commission - a commission introduced by vote in 2008 ( Prop 11 ) and 2010 ( Prop 20 ) designed to stop exactly this type of political interference.

These are not ancient votes - California voters made it clear twice - do not do this. The only poll I have seen so far says that 62% are against this move, including 70% of independents.

Here is what I expect to happen - some groups will file suit within days to prevent the election, a judge will issue a TRO. It will take at least six weeks to resolve - around the first week in October - that will result in the Nov 4 date failing due to time constraints. Newsom will try again around March 3, and if we assume he is successful his new map will be challenged by groups again - another TRO.

Lets say he wins that case by May, that's when primary season begins. Do not underestimate the anger of Democrat incumbents having to absorb Republican areas into their districts, making them less winnable.

It's the last thing the incumbents need during election season.

This is not a Democrat slam dunk - and what will make it worse is some Red states that would have sat this out will now retaliate.

Realistically if Newsom is successful he will pick up between 2 to 5 seats. If Red states retaliate ( and they will ) they will eradicate at least 10 Democrat seats plus the 5 expected from Texas.

Newsom is rattling a toxic cage but he doesn't really care as he wants to run for President - he'll learn to care if the California Democrats end up in a civil war over redictricting in an election year - this is a very, very risky move that could easily backfire - especially if the Independents decide to punish the Democrats.

Why is it, that governor Newsome has profiled himself as the only true opponent of Donalds "policies". The rest of the US opposition has gone into mental hybernation. How is something like this possible?

The good Governor may be going in to hiding himself soon.  There is a troubling case in Florida concerning an illegal immigrant who killed 3 people, and how California's sanctuary state policies made it possible.  A truck driver from India entered the US illegally in 2018 via the Mexico/Cali border. But instead of being deported, he was able to obtain a CDL (commercial driver's license) and begin driving 18 wheelers.  Well, his driving just killed a family of 3. They would still be alive if not for Newsom and his dangerous ideas.

Absolute nonsense in Oz, a woman killed 3 family members with a mushroom meal.

That is truely GOLD

Of course, we won't have to wait long for the clutching of pearls from Republicans because Newsom said Abbott should "stand up" when he's in a wheelchair.

"My, oh my, how can the woke librul Demon-rats hate the handicapped so much.

Retaliate? 🤣

It's a red State which started it, and Trump and Vance have already been inciting them to do more! Actually, gerrymandering is a frequent Republican tactic.

"Unsurprisingly, when one party has control over drawing district lines in a state, elected officials usually create districts to benefit their party. There are more Republican-led states like that than Democratic-led ones, according to the Brennan Center.

Groups that seek to end gerrymandering usually recommend that states reduce the role that politicians play in drawing new districts. Eleven states do that by using commissions that are bipartisan or that include nonpoliticians. Most of those states are led by Democrats. Again, California has one and Texas does not."
