Biden had been warning the previous German Chancellor for ages about the folly of an over-dependence on cheap Russian gas, then he had the pipelines destroyed to get their attention.

 

The Trumpists argued at the time that it was a self-serving ploy to force the EU to buy more energy from the US and he was criticized for this. Now Trump is using tariffs to do precisely the same thing and it's suddenly OK.

I wonder why Medvedev would refer to last-resort nuclear strike capabilities in response to a threat of sanctions.

 

Last-resort nuclear capabilities are typically intended to be insurance against a decapitation strike. I can't imagine sanctions decapitating Russia without the decapitation coming from internal sources.

Not so long ago President Trump was denouncing US support for Ukraine because of the nuclear risks it risked. And it's one thing to move the subs. Quite another for a President to publicize that move. Whatever happened to disengagement?
