My Cambodian friend has had enough with the verbal abuses and wants to go home. But she just realized she hasn't filed a TM-7 Extension of Stay when she switched jobs a year ago. Her work permit is still valid and she is still working. She also has not filed any 90 day reporting either for at least the same time frame. I think she just assumed a work permit was all she needed, with no one telling her about the visa requirements. If she just shows up at the airport to leave, will she be subject to being detained? If a fine at the airport is an easier and cheaper way to deal with the situation than trying to resolve it at the immigration (and possibly needing an agent) before leaving, that would be preferred. Her English and Thai are limited.

Thinking this is best option.

Seems she didn't change employment correctly so is in overstay.

She wouldn't be detained at airport and most likely the 90 reporting doesn't come into play.

Being fined is set at 500/day up to maximum 20k baht + ban

I was beginning to think that as well. Good to get an expert's opinion. Thank you.

When did the latest permission to stay expire as shown in her passport?

She changed jobs last February and her boss got her a new work permit but apparently nothing was done in regards to the visa itse

@worldexpress I deleted your reply to Briggsy. His post is very valid however you included your friends name detail by accident.

I cannot correct so deleted post.

Okay. Thanks for looking out. The name on the stamp, I think, was the person issuing the visa at the Consulate in Cambodia.

She was stamped in for 2 years when arriving in April 2024 with a LA visa.. When she changed employer and obtained a new WP last Feb, she didn't think to update her visa. So I'm assuming she has technically overstayed since the old WP was cancelled.

If the entry stamp still shows as valid in her passport, she can just leave and the immigration officers at the airport will be none the wiser.  She will certainly run into some pretty large issues if she returns in the future and attempts to work, but just to get out of Thailand likely won't have any issues if what you say is accurate.

From what I see on social media and knowing how the Thais treat Cambodians in general, I think it gets pretty nasty at this point.

NO< my khmer partner of 14 + years here in phuket has zero problems and everyone at the shops, market knows she is khmer
There is in effect an amnesty for Cambodia workers with expired wp, visas etc wanting to return ( hun sen wants them all to go back)

If she has a L-a visa and was stamped in to april 2026 there will be no problem as there is no reason to update new employer on visa   My Khmer gf has a L-A visa as well and that does not mention who she works for, the WP does

MY gf had to fly out in June to get a new passport , returned last sunday by air,  Lady IO said she was a strong person  🙂

fyi; if she gets a re entry permit she wont have any trouble coming back in up until april 2026

Thank you so much for that. It will reassure her and allow her to sleep better.

Yesterday (4th August 2025) I flew back to home in Siem Reap (Cambodia) via Air Asia from Bangkok DMK. For the first time ever, I was subjected to hassle in Bangkok. I am a UK citizen not Khmer.

First, at DMK on arrival from Siem Reap, all passengers had to negotiate Thai security officers (unarmed) strategically placed along the arrival corridors.

My mobile phone with Cambodian SIM card was blocked. Previously it was linked to DTAC and calls could be made. I did not purchase a Thai SIM for just 2 days.

On departure from Bangkok DMK yesterday, this was when the hassle started.  At Air Asia check-in, when I handed my UK passport with my printed booking reference, the young lady became confused. First she asked if I had a Cambodian visa - answer yes, with direction to page. She was then on the phone and eventually asked if I had a return flight to Thailand - answer no, I lived in Cambodia and was about to take my return flight!

I then had to wait with my wheelchair attendant for some considerable time whilst she disappeared with my passport. On arrival back at her check-in desk, again I was asked if I lived in Thailand - answer no. My UK passport was returned to me and I was told I had been cleared to fly!

No wonder such hassle is killing Thai tourism, the country only has itself to blame!

Personally, I believed it was the number of annual retirement visas in my passport from both Cambodia and Thailand that caused the confusion.

Interesting! I just checked with my Cellcard SIM card and it's the same, it said "Emergency calls only" when I tried to use it in Thailand. I usually leave it in my phone deactivated while in Thailand, but roaming used to work fine. Childish to the max.

any more childish than Cambodia blocking thai soap operas and movies being shown in Cambodia?

To be clear, I don't know which side caused roaming to stop working. Could be that Thai networks don't allow Cambodian SIM cards roaming access anymore, or Cambodian networks don't allow their SIM cards to be used in Thailand anymore. Or both. My statement stands regardless, it's childish to the max.

The same applies to many other things on both sides, so I don't see any value in making the kind of comparison you're asking for.
