Locate a person in jail

Featured Replies

An acquaintance messaged me a couple of weeks ago that he was due in court in two days, and was currently in jail. I do not know why. Since then, there has been no word from him, and I assume he is in jail, having been sentenced by the court. Is there a way of finding out if he is in jail, and if so, which jail, and can I contact or visit him? He lives in Bangkok.

Maybe contact his embassy. They should have been made aware of his imprisonment.

Good Luck, it took us about three months to find a Belgian friend that was inprisoned because of what his partner was doing, guilt by association, took a lawyer to finally get them to disclose his whereabouts.  Once found, they quickly deported him back to Belgium and blacklisted for 10 years even with no proof of guilt. He wrote us and his partner was smuggling heroin in Surfboards their company was sending to Europe.

Out of curiousity, did you inquire at the Belgium Embassy in Thailand?

I once located someone held in the Immigration Detention Center by going there and inquiring about whether someone by that name was detained there. I knew the name of the detainee. The Immigration Detention Center then gave me her cell number and detainee number. If you have some idea of where your acquaintance is held, going there and inquiring may yield result. I guess prisons are glad to get visitors because it brings them money.

The embassy seems the best option at this time. They must have confiscated his phone, or he would have contacted one of us. I have no idea what he did.

No proof of guilt?

His company sending heroin in surfboards to Europe. That he claims to know nothing doesn't count for much.

For what it's worth, we all believed him, he was way too soft and scared of his own shadow to be involved in anything like that. -  Gullible Yes, Criminal No.  His Thai  business partner on the other hand was a pretty shifty character.

I doubt the embassy would be giving out information like that due to privacy regulations TBH.

You could always try though.

Seems odd he didn’t tell you where he was being held in the message he sent to you.

If you are in Bangkok, go to a jail and ask. It's easier if you have a Thai friend accompany you, but you can do it by yourself.

The best place to try first imo would be Bangkok Remand and Klong Prem which are next to each other, or there is also Bang Kwang. Tell them the name of the person you are there to visit. If they are not there, you will soon find out. There is an office; you can try asking there for help if they are imprisoned somewhere else.

You can visit prisoners. It's been a few years since I've been to Klong Prem but I suggest you go in the morning. Prisoners get limited visits, so you don't want to go and then find someone has already visited them for the day. If you find out other people are visiting and you want to make future visits, try to work out a schedule. It's better for someone to get a few visits a week than for everyone to turn up on the same day. Make sure you have your passport with you. Have some cash so you can buy your friend any items they require from the commissary. You used to be able to deposit money to an account and pay for extra food, but I don't know if this is still the case.

Years ago the Australian Embassy was very happy to give me all the info I needed on how and where to visit an Australian I knew, so you never know.
