I don't doubt the OP's particular experience, but I know a few who changed without question.

I can post 10 +  threads where change from marriage to retirement extensions required wife to be present.

  • OP, you have good advice in post above.  Not sure what you mean  "guarantee"  You need a bank letter which is simple letter from bank that you are owner of the account and balance on day of

  • Did you ask for a list of requirements for a retirement extension? That's what you need.  The fact that you are changing is not relevant, because it's just an application for an extension based on a d

  • You have outlined some requirements for extension based on marriage.  The OP is applying for extension based on retirement.  The requirements have been outlined in the thread.

If that's the basis of your opinion, then I guess @RubbaJohnny is up <deleted> creek without a paddle as he states his wife is away.

In that situation, shouldn't he then be advised he'll have to leave the Country and start all over again.

Be interesting to know the outcome if his wife can't be present.

The very first reply from @BrandonJT is correct...

"When switching from marriage to retirement, your wife will also need to be present for this extension, but will not need to be present for future applications"

The OP can chat with local immigration re being cut some slack.

Doubt he will be successful.

Perhaps some POA or written letter from wife might suffice.

Hopefully the OP will update at some point.

And yes he does have option to "start over"

I think many IO's would rather process an application based on retirement that those based on Thai spouse, so they don't want to make waves if that's your choice.

I am one of them.  Still married, but switched to retirement at Jomtien.  My wife will not go near that place, due to the abuse heaped upon her by those (deleted) at the "family extension" desk, some years back.  I went in-advance to get requirements, which included "bring Kor Ror 3."  I brought that, and a recent KR-2, as well - thinking they would want to verify no-divorce (during the then-ongoing marriage-based extension) - but they did not take it.

Of course, this policy could have changed the next day.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Rob.

Whilst I'd agree with BrandonJT that usually the wife would need to be present when switching from marriage to retirement extensions, if the wife cannot or won't attend, and the applicant meets the higher financial requirements, Immigration only have two choices.
I know 3 local expats who successfully switched without the wife's presence, one whose wife worked in Bangkok Mon-Fri, one whose wife was away on business in China, and another whose wife is a high ranking government official and simply found it laborious and time-wasting to take the time from her work,

However, I was literally accused of talking through my anus.

Mental note to self.

If someone asks advice as per the OP I will add a caveat that if wife is

1. Not living in province

2. Away on business in another country

3. HiSo that finds the required attendance "laborious"

Then no need for wife to attend.

It's a given in Thailand that offices vary and can make certain accommodations.

I suggested OP chat with immigration office.

From the OP...

"Helpful to know wife needed as she is away at present"

"Away at present" does not equate to business in China.

Perhaps the OP simply needs to consider that for date for next extension.
