Featured Replies

I’d like to get a knee replacement in Bkk. Can anyone recommend a good place, my budget is 300,000 baht.

Thank you.

In Bangkok normal package cost at private hospitals is 350k.

The place above, which is not in Bangkok but rather Sri Racha, might be your best bet if 300k is your absolute max...but you need first to ascertain if it is inclusive of the prostheses as it does not mention that.  If prostheses costis extra then will end up about same as in Bangkok

Best knee surgeon in Thailand is https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/doctors/panya-wongpatimachai

TKR there is 349K package proce

I had mine done last year in Chiang Mai at a total cost of 240,000 and 10 days in a nice room for both myself and my misses , that even covered the outpatient visits to the surgeon’s private rooms over the next 6 months.

Sounds like it would be better all-round to travel to Chiang Mai rather than having the procedure done in Bangkok.

Friend got both knees done at Bangkok Hospital. It cost her just under 250K per knee. Result was perfect. She was turned down by 2 other hospitals due to her weight. Op was 4 yrs ago & price may have gone up.

I'm not based in Bangkok (Bumrungrad Hospital), but I like you to go for a second opinion and consider your age (?)

Thanks for that information.

My American health insurance sent me to Bumrungrad for my knee problems when I was in Thailand earlier this year.   I don't think think the doctor in your link is the one that treated me though.

I guess I could ask for him though.

I a tired of being crippled and not being able walk like I used to!

I had a hip replacement and a friend had a knee replacement at Bangkok International Hospital, Dr. Phonthakorn Panichkul - he's trained in Canada, up-to-date on the latest techniques, nothing but great things to say about the experience and result.

Pro tip - get quotations from several hospitals including Vejthani and Saint Louis because several of the best specialists also do operations once a week at these places for lower costs.

Better Pro Tip - after getting the quotations and understanding the range of options, get back to your preferred option and note that you're limited in budget so are going to go for one of the cheaper hospitals but you'd much prefer theirs, is there anything they can do on the cost?

I was able to save SIGNIFICANT amounts of money by doing this. They WILL actually haggle if you ask quite often.

Bangkok hospital Udon Thani quoted me 250,000 Bt for a single knee replacement ( I'm self insured -- a question they asked before giving me the estimate). Includes 5 night stay in hospital with your own support individual. Don't know about Bangkok area.

How was the pain please? cos what puts me off is the first 6 months after the operation?

I had both of mine replaced in Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok. With no problems and a quickish recovery on both of them. Would recommend them any day. Surgeon was a Dr. Panya, very good.

My apology, Sheryl, but I disagree with you.  Doctor Panya was my knee surgeon at one time.  I cannot agree with your assessment; although, I've a friend who had both knees replaced and was satisfied.

I guess I just caught him during a bad day/week.

I had both mine done one at a time by Dr. Panya at Bumrungrad with great success, and still pain free after 5-6 years,

As I remember, recovery was pretty fast, and not much pain. On crutches in a few days and pretty much pain free and walking fine in a month.

Join the club!

This is your man. Dr Thanainit, Chairman of the Thai Hip and Knee Replacement Association (and quite a few other medical associations, eg hand, shoulder etc) and former Professor of Orthopaedics at Phramontkutklao Hospital (the 'Army Hospital' near Victory Monument). After retirement he now works at Phyathai 2 Hospital and is the bees knees (joke) as far as I am concerned.

I was able to get into the Army Hospital many years ago due to being a former UK SF soldier and also having medical connections working there, so don't try going there because it's highly unlikely you'll be accepted.

However, Phyathai 2 is excellent and Dr Thanianit is a really nice doctor on a personal level, with excellent English and highly qualified, having trained in Italy, Japan, the US, Switzerland and Thailand. All his info is in the link here - https://tinyurl.com/3y6wk8hc
Prices for single and double TKR are in this link - https://tinyurl.com/4dturft3

Costs for a single TKR are 300,000 baht or there's a premium price of 360,000, also in the link. A double TKR is 580,000 baht with a premium price of 700,000, also in the link.
The Army hospital prices are half those above, which is why I am waiting for my turn with gritted teeth. No premium prices in a Government hospital but I don't care about luxury, just having a normal life again.

I can't speak too highly of Dr Thanainit who really helped me a lot before he left the Army hospital. I am on their waiting list with 2 years to go, because I can't afford the above private prices and I do wish they'd hurry up!
