Bank account frozen

You are jumping the gun a bit. When a bank says it is visa related, it cannot be assumed it has to do with funds for an extension.

Back in 2014 I got an email saying I had to visit the branch and show passport or i would  lose access to online banking. They wanted to check I had a long term visa, I had a Non O ME at the time and that was considered acceptable.

In the last day or so a message has appeared on my phone from  TTB  that I must visit "a branch" with passport by 9th Sept 2025. Only a couple of week notice and I seldom take notice of messages, there was one on there for weeks about FATCA, ignored that one.

If I don't go what is likely to happen.

But this is exact same bank and branch through which I first got the retirement visa and then got an extension for it one year later. They themselves provided me with the documents for visa agency. How comes this bank and this branch do not know that I am on retirement visa? And they lock my funds for weeks just to get this information from me? Unbelievable!

  • Who's fault is that? If you are living 1400k from you bank, it is time to open a local account.

Why have I not experienced this "ineptitude"? Hmmm... Maybe because it is not all that difficult to stay on top of this stuff? Just sayin', peeps LOVE to whinge.

I would usually agree with you. But I'd say when you have a few people "whinging" such as in previous years, it's them who deserve the blame. This year, however, complaints are through the roof.

I do realize that Bangkok Bank is under quite some pressure to clean up their act, but still, they could train their staff better and they could give affected customers some advance notice, as other banks seem to do from similar reports. That they just freeze an account without prior notice and expect you to visit your HOME branch to fix it is unnecessarily onerous.

How come you don't pay more attention to what the banks are doing?

Funny how sovereign countries have rules, eh. They might not be the same as your country, but if you don't understand them, and the fact that rules will change over time, you will end up in these situations. Deal with it

Calm down, my post merely stated the facts, no complaints. I am dealing with it.

Have you tried to do that lately. I was advised by my bank (not BKB) that to close my current account at a distant branch and open a new one at the local branch would require every bit of paper work and would take the head office at least one month to approve it. So have you done it in an easier system.

I once — naively, indeed — thought that a bank was a place where one could keep their money safely. Perhaps they were, once upon a time. But year after year they have turned into soulless bureaucratic machines, caring nothing about their customers’ basic rights.

I will definitely be moving more and more of my money into stablecoins now.And advise it to others too.

Obviously you have never had an account frozen, Wonder how you would deal with it.

The real issue is waking up in the morning and finding out that you suddenly have no money for your everyday life. Yesterday, before going to sleep, you had more than enough, and now you are practically bankrupt. And all of this just because someone at the bank decided to introduce a new policy?

What if I had children who needed food? What if I myself had planned to buy expensive medicine this morning? There are thousands of possible “ifs” — but who cares? At the bank, I was told it would take at least 12 days before I could regain access to my own money.

Is that your situation?

What backup money do you have currently, if any?

Bottom line is that if you didn't open the account with a qualifying visa then the bank will require you to update your visa details. Did you visit your bank and show passport on receiving the 12 month extension, they would need a copy of your extension?

This has been in place since 2014 but been generally ignored by banks but recently stricter houskeeping has been put in place.

This statement appeared in the recent Baan Thai newsletter.

"To qualify, you’ll need to hold a long-term visa including Non-O, Non-B, LTR or Privilege. The Bank of Thailand does not permit banks to open accounts for DTV visa holders at this time. For Non-O retirement or marriage visas, this will require your e filing for a 90-day visa overseas (best from your home country before arriving) and the using the 90-day visa to open your Thai account into which you can then wire the required funds to obtain a one-year extension. "

A few weeks ago I watched a video on YouTube (Integrity legal) basically saying that Bangkok Bank had now started freezing foreigner's accounts after customers had requested immigration letters and statements. In one case for 6 months!

Closed in seconds — opened only after weeks, if not longer.

You don't have a second Account with another Bank, no foreign Credit or Debit Card to pull Money from an ATM? Never rely on one source of Money only in Thailand. And sounds like you go everyday to the ATM to get Money? As your Account is in a different Province you have to pay always a fee, better to get an Account opened in your Province of Residence.

I still have some money outside Thailand, including part of it in USDT. I’ll arrange a transfer to another one of my bank accounts here, so I’ll survive. But the situation could have been much worse. Did anyone from the bank bother to ask about my circumstances before fully restricting my access? Absolutely not. And let’s be clear—the money wasn’t frozen because of any suspicion of criminal activity. It was simply the result of cold, bureaucratic games.

"In a very bad English..."

Gawd...   How is your Thai language skill living here in Thailand?   You could have called the Call Centre where the staff speak near-as-dammit perfect English.

When I moved to Chonburi I opened second account there with same bank, done there and then. Just kept the original. Use one for immigration and one for general use.

Did you visit and show passport?

I have yet to come across mental photocopying.

I didn’t say that as a reproach. My point was only that I couldn’t get any useful information from that conversation. I truly respect the effort many Thai people make to speak English with us.

And just stay Thailand 2x 90 day , as i planned max 6 months Thailand , AND avoiding so all that new I.O. regulations as i shall  not make a year renting contract as only staying  2X 3 months seperate to total 6 months Thailand , and this every time all over again .....more simpel it can not be

Nope. Had to drive 4 hrs to Phuket to close an account. Done on the spot.

Says someone who thinks they still live in their home country... But I'm glad u are starting to realise you were naive.

They can't just lock down your money -

They can if the customer agreed to it under their rules of the transaction.

Ah, so many thumbs down... Do y'all think that living here was gonna be a walk in the park? 😅😅😅

That is good. It has happened to me in the home country but fortunately they told me they were going to do it, so I transferred the money to another bank. Still not a pleasant experience when you have had the account for ten years.

How about the first question of the trouble of opening a new account at your local branch. For me they just did not want to do it.

2 hours ago, ukrules said:

what if you moved to Thailand and then decided after a couple of months that it's not for you - and go to Vietnam - you're left with a bank account in Thailand with no address and no access to your money?

Then you don't agree to a condition of the transaction knowing that the tie-up is in effect!
