Patong Police face increasing scrutiny as they delay pressing charges against six foreign tourists accused of assaulting a local motorbike rental operator.

The incident took place on 10 August, leaving the victim with severe injuries, including a broken jaw and ribs. Public attention surged when a video of the brutal attack went viral, prompting Nirat Phongsitthaworn, the National Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, to demand an immediate investigation by the Kathu district chief. Local police were subsequently forced into action.

Despite significant public outcry, the Patong Police remain reticent. Nine days have passed without the release of the suspects' identities or confirmation of their legal status. Confusion further escalated when the Kathu District Office announced deportation proceedings on 18 August, although police later admitted that no charges had been filed.

Police Lieutenant Chittawan Pengkaew confirmed on 19 August that the tourists are still in Thailand, stating, “The case is under investigation, pending a medical report to ascertain the victim’s injuries.”

Doctors initially attended to the victim at Patong Hospital before transferring him to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed assessment.

Reports suggest the altercation began when one tourist rented a Honda X-ADV 750cc motorcycle, subsequently damaged in an accident. The rental shop demanded compensation of 50,000 THB, which the tourist allegedly countered with just 10,000 THB. The ensuing altercation erupted into a gang assault, captured on video at Rolling Stone All Tour on Soi Patong Centre, Phra Metta Road.

Adding complexity to the situation, one of the tourists filed a counter-complaint, alleging assault by a Thai national. Efforts are now being made by the suspects and their embassy representatives to expedite the process to facilitate their return home.

Kathu Deputy District Chief Sikarin Aninbon has vowed to monitor developments closely, although local residents remain sceptical of any swift resolution.

“We will continue to provide updates,” Sikarin assured, aiming to address community concerns over justice and accountability. As the controversy unfolds, the situation underscores growing frustrations with law enforcement’s handling of the case.
