Thailand Post Suspends US Parcels as Trump Axes Tax Exemption

Well, doesn't have anything to do with Thailand, but I'm absolutely sure the Democrat Party in America has always claimed "higher taxes means more money"..... for the government.

Some people are claiming that DHL & FedEx are no longer accepting "parcels".  I'll find out if this is true, I'm sure.

If "Democrat Party in America claims "higher taxes means more money"..... for the government." would mean they are attached to realty and understand how accounting works.  Unlike .... MAGA illiterates who STILL do not grasp that a Tariff is a TAX paid by CONSUMERS in the country that takes delivery of good and services.

as for "Some people are claiming that DHL & FedEx are no longer accepting "parcels" ... um yeah, that is all over the news!

The taxes they will collect in the long run will allow to raise wages. Eventually, the buying power of American people will increase. Not immediately, it will take 2 years or so.

Looking for investors to create tee shirts and hats that say "What about Stilton Cheese?" because it is a perfect summary of the way social media news is filtered, and commented on.  Not a summary or consideration of the macro effect of a global choke point in commerce and communication.  No!  It comes down to the most minute grain of sand ... "How, specifically, does this issue affect me, and what are "They" going to do about it??" In his case, the burning question "What about Stilton Cheese?"  Thank you GammaGlobulin for this sublime and wonderful example of "Yes, in fact, it IS ... all about me."

So to our community here I say, from here on out, whenever you decide to comment on global news events, the correct input is  What about Stilton Cheese? and nothing else.  If enough of us get in on this joke, we can create an international meme / saying that has real value, or, no value at all!  Perfect!

This does not seem to be a clever move. Punish individuals for what others have done.

Thai already have import duties.   Can you not understand?

Now we can add Taiwan and Japan to the list of countries not allowing regular parcel mail sent to the U.S., courtesy of Trump:

Taiwan and Japan halt small parcel shipments to U.S. after end of duty-free exemption

"Taiwan’s postal service (NYSEARCA:EWT) has suspended shipments of small parcels to the United States, effective Tuesday, in response to the Trump administration’s move to scrap the “de minimis” duty exemption for low-value imports.

The state-owned Chunghwa Post has stopped delivering packages as “the global postal system has not yet provided a service allowing senders to prepay customs duty, and Chunghwa Post’s contracted carriers have also announced suspension of merchandise mail deliveries,” according to the company’s statement on Monday.

Elsewhere, Japan Post Co. will also suspend shipping of some small packages to the U.S. due to fresh tariffs imposed by the U.S. government.

From the US embassy re: Thai Post Office

Dear ...,

With the current mailing limitations of Thailand Post, you are able to instead mail the completed and signed SSA-7162 form directly to the Social Security Administration office in Manila, Philippines at the address below.

U.S. Embassy – Manila
Attention: FEQ
1201 Roxas Boulevard, Ermita

We advise using a trackable courier service (FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc,) so you can check the status of the package instantaneously.  Please be advised that the Social Security Administration office does not accept electronic or faxed forms.

Please note that this is a temporary procedure only during Thailand Post mailing disruptions.  Forms should be mailed to the standard mailing address / PO box once the mailing system resumes service.

I would feel more secure about this if 1) there was a message on the US embassy Bangkok's website attesting to it and 2) FBU and the US embassy in Manila put up a message confirming it.

If someone calls Manila, ask about it. I'll also ask next week when I email them for confirmation my 8 Aug form was received.

The US were making no money from small parcels...and they are still making no money...

...but if Trump's stance reduces some of the cost of getting stuff into Thailand, I'm all for it.

I think some are confused as to why countries are doing this...  They don't know how duties will be collected, what additional info needs to be submitted, nor where to submit it.  In other words, another fiasco that had zero foresight.  Clowns.

Who in the hell still uses snail mail?  Especially from Thailand to the USA.

Probably the same people who write checks.

It is rather difficult to send a parcel using any of those systems you have listed!

Never heard of FedEx or DHL?

Thai post isn’t the only rodeo in town.

Just yesterday I went to the Post Office to mail a document for Social Security questions and answers with No, No and No and then sign the back page and mail back to the US. The clerk said I would not be able to send the letter because of the restrictions. I told her my send was NOT a package but a letter. After the back and forth a light came over her head and things went on as I planned as usual. I send this form in to SS maybe twice a year with the same answers each tome. Why this can not be done electronically I haven't a clue as I have asked with no answers from SS. After 1,530 THB later my Letter is now in Bangkok at the airport. End of Story. SS thinks everyone who receives SS monthly payments lives in the States. Go Figure...

Think?  All government workers think about is their next paycheck.  Now with Trump they wonder.  They wonder if they will have a job tomorrow.

People in the US who collect SS payments don't have to do the 7162. Only those living outside of the US. SS does not think everyone live in the states or they wouldn't be sending out 7162 forms to be sent back.

Btw, DHL stopped delivering to the US, don't know about FedEx. A pity you don't grasp the issue here.

Thanks, Mike, for the information. I usually look up form numbers to see precisely the reasons/details. I looked at the paperwork attached to the mail from SS and the Form 7162 is at the top of the form. Thanks Again...CD

Letters aren't parcels.

Thailand has blocked everything -- letters and parcels.

The SS form is a letter.

Also the benefits cutoff if it happened won't happen until well into next year.

There is plenty of time to deal with this even if you don't get the first mailing form back in time.
