A massive 116-tonne concrete beam from a pedestrian overpass under construction collapsed on the night of 22 August, blocking a major road in Chanthaburi province.

The incident occurred at around 20.20 on Highway 317, Chanthaburi–Sa Kaeo, in Ban Mathai, Patthawi Subdistrict, Makham District. The beam, part of a pedestrian bridge intended to connect to the Makham Town Municipality Market, came crashing down.

The falling section crushed a parked trailer lorry and a crane belonging to the construction contractor, causing damage estimated at 7 million baht. Remarkably, no injuries were reported, as workers had just moved slightly away from the immediate area when the collapse happened.

Witnesses said the beam had been lifted into position and workers were preparing to secure it with reinforced steel supports when it suddenly collapsed.

The collapsed structure completely blocked both directions of Highway 317, paralysing traffic into and out of Chanthaburi. Authorities deployed teams to clear the debris over night and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.

Officials are investigating the cause of the collapse, with particular attention to the construction process and safety standards.
