My deepest apologies if I've offended any Cambodians. It turns out that the US is far more violent than Cambodia. In fact, the homicide rate in the US is more than DOUBLE of what the rate is in Cambodia.

Mind-blowing. Now I know why you feel safe enough to stay there without a gun, but not so in the US, buddy!

Smart folks laugh at that stat when you look at the murder map by county. 99% of the US is one of the safest place on earth.

You ignorance astounds me - but I am used to i from woke liberals.

Nothing stopping anyone in Baltimore travelling to Mexico either you twit. It is not going to stop anything if they ban guns - which they cannot do because - Constitution.

Bryant was not in an institution because he was not certified insane - unlike now. But Bryant was a nutter from a young age - look it up - he was clearly 'not right'. His Father says the worst decision of his life was buying him a slug gun (air rifle) when 14 - it made him even worse and more dangerous.  He was once observed shooting a bird and then walking over and shooting it in the heard again and again and again.

Gun laws will make no difference - 500 million on the streets now. Stop being soft on the mentally unstable and the problem will greatly reduce.  I can agree with suggestions that limiting assault weapons to club members and professional shooters and those that pass an NRA training course, would be a good idea. But again - Constitution. So IMO the best solution is to detain and assess all mentally unstable people.

Being called ignorant by a retarded MAGA gun nut does not surprise me. Fact is, the system failed to detect Bryant. However, Australia does not put its mentally ill on the streets as America does.

You are just deflecting from the real issue - America has too many guns, it's too easy to get them, and many Americans are trigger-happy paranoids.

So you don't think the mentally ill can avoid detection, and dissemble? That's moronic.

I'd normally tell you to go <deleted> yourself, but your head is already there.

Really? Wasn't Martin Bryant, the Port Arthur massacre shooter mentally ill?

At the time of the offences he was in receipt of a Disability Support Pension on the basis of being mentally handicapped. Media reports also detailed his odd behaviour as a child. He was able to drive a car and obtain a gun, though he possessed a licence for neither.

Clearly Australia has it under control.

Guns are harder to get than ever in the US.

3 gun massacres in Australia since that time, against thousands in America. Yes, I would say so.

Yeah before Kennedy got popped you could buy them from the back pages of magazines. That was a little much though LOL.

Really? The Minnesota shooter was armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol. That doesn't sound like firearms are hard to get at all.

In the AU, they ship the mentally ill off to Thailand.

Where do you get off comparing a place where 10 people live with the giant nation that is the USA? That's ridiculous. Of course Vanuatu also had less shootings. I mean, at least compare like with like.

Homicide rates were falling in Australia prior to 1996, and in fact increased after the ban.

Yup, 2018 had amost the same figure for homicides as 1995.

So much for the ban making a difference.

Lame

Murder is illegal in the US. What? People are murdered in the US every day, it does not sound like murder is illegal at all.

Laws only apply to people that abide the law.

In Australia, the total number of murder and related incidents decreased significantly between 1995 and 2018, falling from approximately 300 in 1995 to around 230 in 2018, and the murder rate per 100,000 people dropped from about 1.5 to 0.89 over this period.

Details

1995:

The Australian homicide rate was around 1.5 murders per 100,000 people, with approximately 300 recorded incidents.

2018:

The rate dropped to approximately 0.89 murders per 100,000 people, with around 230 recorded incidents.

This represents a nearly 50% decline in Australia's homicide rate since the 1990s.

Wrong. It was 0.98 in 1995. And in 2018 it was 0.97.

Almost no difference.

After the ban, in 2000, it was actually even higher, at 1.02.

How do you know? You don't live in OZ, but I do, and I watch the news every night

1 hour ago, bannork said:

Yes, so if you look at the chart 2000 and even 2003 had almost identical homicide rates to the years before the ban. Only in 2003 did it go down. Long after the ban. So that suggests there were other reasons rather than the ban.

Though the number for 2018 is completely different to the number Google AI states.
