Wise transfers suddenly stopped working

Featured Replies

For years been transferring regular monthly amounts from U.K.  to joint Bangkok Bank account. Today transfer cancelled as says name on recipient account does not match. Tried to send the funds to account in my name only at SCB. Same thing happened. Anybody else experienced this or know how to resolve it?

The Banking partner is shown on today’s first transfer as “Tranglo SGP (THB)”.  The Banking partner is shown on today’s second transfer as “TransferWise Ltd”. Always been shown as “Bangkok Bank THB” on previous successful transfers.

Yes, yes we all know it gets done instantly when sent from some other place, but I am speaking here for Europe and sometimes it would take quite long to arrive in Thailand. But since I started using the service directly fron my bank, it's on my account next day, for far less then the fees I had to pay with the Revolutes and others and the exchange rate is not all that bad...so it's back to the basics and it's not bad at all.

Who has advised you of the transfer cancellation, your UK bank or Wise?

I just had the same thing happen to me ten minutes ago.

I checked the recipient name and realized it didn’t have my middle name. Worked great for 8 years without one, but suddenly stopped this morning.

I went to “fix transfer” on the Wise app, added my middle name and the transfer arrived within a couple minutes.

Where on the app does it have "fix transfer".

I can't find it, please screenshot it.

That’s great. I have been transferring to this account for many years and never had a problem with the name on the account. Like you, I checked and my middle name was missing. I have added it and it still says the name is different. I think it is something to do with the Banking Partner not being Bangkok Bank. If you look at the “Details” tab of your transfer then click on “Get transfer information” on page 2 which “Banking partner” does it show?

It’s already gone on my phone, since it works now.

Just create a new recipient, the same as the old one but with your full name instead of it missing your middle name.

If the old one isn’t missing your middle name then I have no idea.

It says:

Banking partner

Tranglo SGP (THB)

Same here so that isn’t the problem. I will delete the recipient and set them up again and see if that works.

I thought the name of the banking partner only shows on completed transfers?

You are correct. But if you look at the transfer details whilst it is processing the banking partner is displayed. It removes those details once the transfer is cancelled.

For me wise has changed a few things making it harder to do the transfer where it used to be simple they actually made it harder to do and a few steps in the transfer were removed, it no longer arrives within a few minutes but the following afternoon. Did a transfer yesterday so will see if I have any problems to receive it, just checked and it has gone through already.

I updated middle name and it made no difference and the transfer was cancelled. I just took middle name out so the account name was back to exactly what it was before and tried to transfer again and the transfer appears to have been sent successfully. It just hasn’t appeared in my Bangkok Bank account yet. Wise says it can take 1 to 2 days to be credited by the receiving bank but it has always been pretty instant before. None of this makes any sense to me. Thanks for your feedback.

Transfer has got cancelled again as name doesn’t match. This is crazy as Wise said transfer had been successfully sent! I will delete the recipient, set it up again and if that fails will use Revolut!

That didn’t work either. The only thing I can come up with is there is the word “and” written in Thai เเละ between the joint account holder names in our bank book and Wise only allows English characters.

I have just deleted a Bangkok Bank recipient account in my name only as it didn’t have my middle name on the Wise recipient details. Have set it up again exactly as shown in my bank book with middle name and the money arrived in seconds.

What I don’t understand is I have made hundreds of transfers with Wise on that joint Bangkok Bank account over many years and up until today there has never been a problem. Somebody must have changed their system for this to suddenly become a problem. I had a similar name mismatch on my SCB account in my sole name and the transfer failed today. I haven’t tried another Wise transfer to that account yet but suspect it will work when I add my middle name and include . after Mr so it matches my name in my bank account book exactly.

I have never had any problems with transfer to kasikorn bank.Only few seconds everytime.

Sometimes i just add to my Wise account and use the Wise atmcard if needed.

I would actually try the opposite, remove the "Mr" part completely and only put your name exactly as in the bank book. I've never included the "Mr" or "Mr." parts, neither for WISE nor for SWIFT transfers. It has always worked, but I'm not sure if that really is the issue here - at least you could consider trying it as one more option.

Including  Mr part worked on my sole Bangkok Bank account so what I entered on Wise matched my bank book exactly. The issue seems to be with the words เเละ between our names on the Bangkok Bank joint account. I can type these in on Wise but it rejects them as invalid characters. Will see if we can get Bangkok Bank to change it to AND as that will probably work.

As I say 100’s of transfers over many years into that account with no problem until this morning. They must have updated their name matching somehow and it now fails.

I’m sorry to hear you are still unable to send to your joint account. Good luck with getting BBL to change และ to and (or it is AND? Who knows). I hope my comment was helpful.

I think BBL will tell us they cannot change the name on the account and we must close the account and open up a new account. That presents its own challenges!  Your comment was very helpful, thank you.

Have you tried phoning the Bangkok Bank help line on 1333?

A different issue altogether for me but they managed to spur my branch into action almost immediately.

Worth a try if you haven't already done so.

Assuming that the other holder of your joint account is your Thai wife, does her name appear on the account in Thai or Western script?

My wife is British so her name is in English. It must be the และ causing the issue. We will go to Bangkok Bank and see if they can change it to AND. Failing that I will do as Farmerslife suggests and phone 1333.

Doubt it. Nearly all Wise problem threads on this forum are about personal experiences that no one else ever sees.

It might be something to do with the recent clamping down by banks to reduce fraud. Have you been into either of your banks recently to have your face scanned and passport details checked? I'm not saying it is, but it could be something like that.

yes, just got my bank letter for Immigration from Bangkok Bank so no problems with my accounts. Already have facial scan set up. The Wise/Bank systems have been updated to check on names which is why เเละ (AND) is the problem. Before it was not checking this. Lots of people having issues with names not matching. Sole accounts can be resolved easily. Joint accounts that use เเละ are the problem. I will go into my local bank branch to see if they can change it from เเละ to AND.

That should hopefully strengthen your case for getting the และ changed to AND on your joint account, I would have thought. Good luck with the bank!

Unfortunately your situation is not helped by Wise's steadfast refusal to have account holders' name details recorded in their systems in other than the English format. That's my only beef with them, personally.
