Residence certificate required for registering a new car?

Featured Replies

I'm about to take delivery of a new Toyota, bought from a dealership.  Is it correct that '20 days' later I need to get a Residence certificate from Immigration (Rayong) in order to get the white plates?

When I've got my new Car last year my yellow Housebook was used, all done by Dealership.

If that's what the dealership told you I'd be inclined to believe them

not sure about Rayong but Chonburi want a residence certificate

not a yellow book.

Thats correct...

In order to Register a car in your own name you will need a proof of address - which is either.

a) A Certificate of Address (from Immigration)

b) An Affirmation of Residence (from your consuilate - if they do it)

b) Yellow House book (Tabien Baan) - Copy of.

1) You can either give this information to directly to the dealership who will go through thr registration process on your behalf - but sometimes they take a while.

2) OR, you can register on line (but can only do this with a Thai ID or Yellow House Book - and choose your own plate.

3) OR, you can go to the DLT yourself with any of the documents and chose your own number.

When doing so yourself (latter two options) the dealier ship needs to have registered that you have purchased the car and you will need the Chassis number so they can 'tie' both piece of information together - you then get a slip of paper with your plate number to give the dealer and they arrange to have the plates printed.

1) is simplest - letting the dealer deal with it all.

2) Gets you the plate number you prefer yourself and is simple enough if you are patient with this stuff.

Note: As Johng mentioned - Some DLT's such as Chonburi can be 'awkward' and not accept the Yellow House book for some inexplicable reason (law unto themselves).

Thanks, that's very helpful.

If the Dealership do it for me, presumably I need to get the Certificate of Address from Immigration (I don't have a Yellow Book) first and give it to the dealer?

Alternatively, if I do it myself, I just take the Certificate of Address, passport and paperwork from the Dealership, to the DLT?

Correct - Simplest solution:

- Obtain a Certificate of Address from Immigration and give it to the Dealership and long with a Copy of Passport.

Correct - Slightly more complex, but easily doable.

I've done this in the past (DLT at Chatuchak in BKK) when wanting to 'select a specific number' for our car.

If you don't care what registration number you are given - then its easier just to let the dealership get one with if (after you've given then your CoA).

So you finally bit the bullet — what model Toyota did you get?

When I registered my new car last year it was all handled by my Toyota dealer.

I gave them a copy of my passport with O-visa extension, my Thai driving licence, and my partner’s TM30 Housemaster’s receipt, and they did the rest.

The dealer sent everything to Toyota HQ in Bangkok, where their central team handled the registration with the Department of Land Transport (DLT).

Once the DLT finished, the plates, registration book, and tax sticker came back through the dealer.

They fitted the plates and put the sticker on the windscreen.

Thanks.  Hopefully the Rayong Toyota dealer will do the same.

I ended up buying a Toyota Yaris Cross.
