Without over analyzing, what it means is that when a guy has to pay for it he has some sort of defect.

 

It's pretty simple. He needs to exchange something in order to get what he wants. What that means is he has little else to offer or that would be accepted in leiu of money. It does not really matter where the other defect lies unless the guy is in therapy, you just know that he is weak somewhere.
