A family land dispute in Udon Thani ended after a man was shot dead while kneeling and begging forgiveness from his brother-in-law, who accused him of taking their father’s land.

The incident took place on 1 September in Ban Kham Hai Yai, Phasuk subdistrict, Wang Sam Mo district. Police and rescue teams arrived at the scene to find the body of 57-year-old Mr Somyot, lying in front of his home. He had been killed by a single gunshot to the head from a homemade long-barrelled gun.

According to investigators, Somyot had been caring for his elderly father-in-law, who later rewarded him by transferring ownership of 20 rai of land. This reportedly angered Mr Bunmee, 56, his wife’s elder brother, who believed he had been unfairly cut out of the inheritance.

On the day of the killing, Bunmee allegedly drank white spirits, took a methamphetamine pill and armed himself with a gun before confronting Somyot at his home. Witnesses said Somyot knelt down, raised his hands in a wai gesture and pleaded with Bunmee, saying he would yield. Despite this, Bunmee pressed the gun to his brother-in-law’s head and pulled the trigger, killing him instantly.

After the shooting, Bunmee fled on a motorcycle before later surrendering to the village headman, who handed him and the weapon over to police. A urine test showed traces of methamphetamine.

Police confirmed that Bunmee has been charged with murder, illegal possession of a firearm and drug use. He remains in custody while the case proceeds.

are you sure? he shouldn't, because now that he died, the land belongs 100% to his wife, assuming no children.

Something we all should do before making major life decisions.
