In a bustling Phuket shopping centre, a clothes shop owner is determined to find a woman who swapped a price tag to pay less for a garment. The owner has offered a reward of 6,000 baht for information leading to her identification.

The incident took place at Boat Avenue Park and Playground in Thalang district on the evening of August 26th, at approximately 7:25 pm. In a bid to uncover the woman's identity, CCTV footage was shared with the Newshawk Phuket Facebook page on September 4th, igniting a conversation amongst local online communities.

According to the CCTV footage, the foreign woman entered the shop alone, displaying a calm demeanour. As she perused the clothing racks, she stealthily swapped the price tag of a more expensive item with that of a cheaper one. The footage captures her examining clothes across two racks, deftly removing a tag from a less costly piece and attaching it to the pricier item.

In a calculated move, she inconspicuously interacted with a shop assistant, adding an air of normalcy to her actions. Afterward, she took the falsely labelled item to the fitting room, solidifying the ruse before making her purchase at the counter.

Worried that this might not be an isolated incident, the shop owner has issued a warning to fellow business operators, particularly those stationed at Boat Avenue Park and Playground, urging increased vigilance. The fear is that this quick trick may have been employed at other establishments, exploiting both the trust of shopkeepers and the bustling pace of Phuket's tourism-driven economy.

The incident was promptly reported to the police, yet the woman's identity remains unknown. Thus, the security footage circulated as an online plea for assistance from the broader community.

This occurrence has struck a familiar chord with locals, recalling a similar event from April last year. On that occasion, two foreign women were caught on CCTV stealing from a souvenir shop on Railay Beach in Krabi, slipping a handmade feather hanger into a waist bag before nonchalantly exiting the premises. No public update was provided on their apprehension, leaving unresolved questions within the community.

While the financial implications of such incidents may vary, the breach of trust between businesses and patrons is profound. Shoplifting activities threaten to exploit the booming tourist sector in Phuket, potentially impacting the reputation and financial health of local entrepreneurs.

As the search for the woman continues, the shop owner remains hopeful for a resolution. The 6,000 baht reward underscores the seriousness of their appeal, not solely for restitution but as a deterrent against future incidents.

In the digital age, where information circumnavigates rapidly, there is optimism that the collective effort of concerned citizens and law enforcement will succeed in identifying the woman and possibly curbing similar deceitful tactics.

Indeed, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance in the retail sector. The shop owner’s story echoes a call for honesty and accountability amidst the vibrant and diverse market scene that draws visitors from across the globe to Phuket’s beautiful shores.
