Angela Rayner has resigned amid a scandal over unpaid stamp duty on her Hove flat. The Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary admitted underpaying £40,000 on the property bought earlier this year. An inquiry into whether she breached the ministerial code has now reported its findings to the Prime Minister.

Rumours of her imminent departure had been swirling all morning, and it is now confirmed that she has left the Government.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said: "Angela Rayner is finally out. The delay shows Keir Starmer’s weakness. Britain deserves better leadership."

Hey Ange, don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.   As far as I am concerned, the median politician is a corrupt liar. The ones in power are worse, because they are in power.

Yeah, Lisa Cook is also a mortgage fraudster, but she's trying to claim it was a mistake, that she did not realize there was anything wrong with calling a rental property a primary residence to get a better rate.

I notice she resigned rather than being sacked. I wonder what 'golden goodbye' she will be given. No doubt considerably more than if she were sacked. Probably walks away from this still ahead of the game.

Is underpaying stamp duty a crime?  Which "men-in-the-street" have been charged in the past and with what offence?

Is Rayner a "mortgage fraudster"?

I believe it is based on the below. Depends whether you view an offence and a crime as the same thing. You can be fined and imprisoned if found guilty.

Clause 95: OFFENCE OF FRAUDULENT EVASION OF TAX

In most countries, there are two systems of justice. One for the commoner, and one for the political class.

Where did you get that information from?   From what I can see it would just be up to HMRC to recover the underpaid amount, plus penalties and interest.

What's that got to do with my question?

Opss! Just a little mistake. Missing 40,000 quid on my taxes could be done by anyone.  It's so hard, being a mum, paying taxes, all on a working class salary and all.  Anyone could do that.  And now it may affect my kids.  Why should my kids suffer for my mistake.  I could be credited that 40,000 quid for being an outstanding working class parent and all.

You asked if underpaying stamp duty was a crime , I think her resignation confirms that she now accepts that it is.

"Think of me children.  Why should they be deprived of a mum.  My mistake.  I admit it.  But I should be able to keep the money I alleged defrauded the government out of for the benefit of the children.  And they won't dare lock me up ya knows.  I'm a somebody.  Not just anybody and all."

I'm thinking............no.

It's tax evasion.  I'm sure there are plenty of men-in-the-street type doing time for tax evasion.  Generally it's worked out in court though.

Is it...where have you had it confirmed that underpaying stamp duty generally results in jail time as opposed to paying the outstanding  duty?

I opened it ok without a subscription. You could always just google the clause I quoted though couldn't you?

That is neither here nor there. You asked whether it is a crime. It is. Question asked, question answered.

You do?     Perhaps her resignation confirms that either (a) she was told to resign or (b) she accepts that her ethics went down the toilet.  A crime...not sure about that unless she refuses to pay HMRC the outstanding.

That's what I did...all I got was the headline and words to the effect of "if you want more information, subscribe".

Oddly enough, I've just tried again and it did open this time.  Thanks.   This was the result of the first attempt...

Does "...underpaying stamp duty generally results in jail time..." is very different from can underpaying stamp duty result in jail time.

Tax evaders in the US often do not go to jail (Hunter Biden as an example) but it is not unusual when they do go to jail. (Micheal Cohen as an example)

What's the US IRS got to do with it?

I have just tried the link I posted and it goes straight to the details of the clause, offence and possible penalty WITHOUT needing to sign-in or subscribe.
