A 53-year-old man has died after his pick-up truck crashed into a fully loaded trailer truck in Nakhon Luang district, Ayutthaya, in an area locals say has seen repeated fatal crashes.

The collision occurred on the Nakhon Luang–Bo Phong Road in front of a fertiliser warehouse in Pak Jan sub-district. Police and rescue workers arrived to find an Isuzu pick-up truck, Bangkok-registered, wedged beneath a 22-wheeled truck carrying 32 tonnes of fertiliser. The vehicle was badly crushed and the driver, a native of Yasothon province, was trapped inside.

Rescue teams from the Ayutthaya Ruamjai Foundation worked for more than two hours using hydraulic cutting equipment before they were able to recover the victim’s body.

The truck driver told police he had just collected fertiliser from the warehouse and was leaving with the assistance of a security guard who was directing traffic. He said he had been carefully edging out when the pick-up suddenly crashed at speed into his truck. The pick-up driver was killed instantly.

Reporters noted that the stretch of road where the crash occurred is known locally as a danger spot. Poor lighting and frequent movements of trailers and lorries in and out of warehouses have caused several serious collisions in the past, some of them fatal.

Police investigators have questioned the truck driver further and will complete their report before deciding on any legal action.
