A father and his young son were killed instantly when a high-voltage power line snapped and fell onto them as they rode home on a motorcycle in Tak province late on 9 September. The victims, a 36-year-old man and his seven-year-old son, were electrocuted and burned to death at the scene. Emergency responders found them still on the motorcycle, the child clutching his father’s back.

The incident occurred on the road near Ban Rekatik, Village 5, Mae La subdistrict, Tha Song Yang district. Narong Prueangkam, manager of the Phetkasem Tha Song Yang Foundation, said he was alerted by the emergency centre at Tha Song Yang Hospital. Rescue workers, police officers, medical teams and officials from the Provincial Electricity Authority were quickly dispatched.

On arrival, officials discovered the charred remains of both victims, identified as Mr Jetoo Khajornkeerikul, aged 36, and his son, Master Chokchai Khajornkeerikul, aged 7. Their motorcycle was also burned beyond recognition. The bodies were sent for autopsy before being released to relatives for funeral arrangements in accordance with legal procedures.

Initial investigations suggest the incident happened when a roadside tree fell, striking a 380-volt high-voltage line and causing it to snap. The cable is believed to have fallen directly onto the motorcycle and riders, delivering a fatal electric shock and sparking a fire. Authorities confirmed that both father and son had died instantly from the severity of the incident.

Provincial police gathered evidence, while electricity officials conducted inspections of the damaged power line and surrounding trees. Local authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies, particularly in rural areas prone to falling trees during the rainy season. The case remains under investigation.
