A 72-year-old woman died after being struck by a car driven by a monk while crossing a road in Buriram on 10 September. The victim, identified as Mrs Khiew, was on her way to collect her state pension when the crash occurred. Despite being rushed to hospital, she later succumbed to her injuries.

The collision happened at around 12:00 on the Na Lao–Hua Fai road, near Ban Khok Sawang School in Hua Fai subdistrict, Khaen Dong district. Police investigators and local rescue teams arrived to find Mrs Khiew lying by the roadside with a severe head injury and a broken leg. Nearby, a Toyota car with front-end damage and a shattered windscreen, from her head impact, was found parked.

CCTV footage from the area captured the moment of impact. The driver, identified as 24-year-old Phra Kriatsak, a monk from a local temple, remained at the scene and held the victim until help arrived. He explained that he was returning from Buriram Buddhist College when Mrs Khiew suddenly crossed the road with an umbrella, leaving him unable to brake in time.

The monk stated he had not been speeding and drove himself because he had no driver. Relatives of the deceased, including her 63-year-old cousin Mrs Buaphan, said she lived alone and had been heading to the Hua Fai Subdistrict Administrative Organisation to collect her 700-baht monthly pension, which she used to buy food and household necessities.

Police at Khaen Dong station have charged Phra Kriatsak with reckless driving causing death. He has been summoned for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
