Pheu Thai Stands Firm: No Leadership Change Amid Restructuring

The Pheu Thai Party has confirmed that its leadership will remain unchanged as it gears up for internal restructuring ahead of the general election. On Wednesday, Phumtham Wechayachai, a key strategist for the party, stated that leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra will continue in her role, provided that party members maintain confidence in her leadership abilities.

While expressing optimism about the party’s electoral prospects, Phumtham acknowledged the need to overhaul internal structures to enhance coordination and efficiency. He noted that many senior figures, often engaged in government roles, have had limited time to focus on party matters.

The focus will be on reforming systems to ensure readiness for future elections. The party is also gearing up for the upcoming by-election on 28 September in Si Sa Ket's Constituency 5, necessitated by the passing of MP Amorntep Sommai. When asked about the participation of prominent party figures in the by-election campaign, Phumtham expressed confidence that necessary arrangements were in place.

Addressing allegations circulating on the CSI LA Facebook page about Paetongtarn’s close associates leveraging political connections for business advantages, Phumtham insisted the justice system should address these claims. He emphasised that Pheu Thai politicians are prepared for scrutiny.

Paetongtarn herself is steering the party amidst personal challenges, notably the Supreme Court’s ruling that her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, must serve a one-year prison sentence. Despite this, veteran party member Prasert Jantararuangtong assured that the party’s spirits remain high. He dismissed concerns about instability, highlighting the unity among MPs and the party's adaptive strategies, with Paetongtarn steadfastly leading.

Simultaneously, Assoc Prof Prinya Thaewanarumitkul of Thammasat University remarked on Facebook about the Supreme Court's significant ruling. It marks the first time the Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions has scrutinised the Department of Corrections' enforcement of a prison sentence, which he noted will now come under careful examination, especially with department officials currently under investigation.

As the Pheu Thai Party seeks to strengthen its internal framework and prepare for upcoming electoral challenges, it remains committed to its leadership and strategies, illustrating resilience in a landscape marked by political and personal complexities.

Well that's them sunk then.

The difficulty for progressives in Thailand is that the People's Party is currently led (at least out front) by mediocre unknowns, the 2 past well-known & hugely liked & respected leaders remaining sidelined by the usual corrupt use of the law courts to attack able and honest opponents.

Doesn't augur well for PP's performance in the coming general election (assuming it happens as promised).

No change because Thskin still wants his puppet as leader to contiue his control regardless of jail time
