Foreigners who inject themselves into Thai political issues are most unwise.

Silly Billy.

Couldn't resist waving a flag and looking east over a border!

As usual, you are completely wrong:

Permanent residency
Thai citizenship

You are both wrong

To be fair to Markus, in the past I spent some time in Sa Kaeo and there's really not much to do there.

This was probably the main event of the year.

A German national married to a Thai woman joined around 50 people in Sa Kaeo province on 13 September to oppose the reopening of a border checkpoint with Cambodia.

#1 He should stay at home and not get involved in protesting.

#2 Keeping the border closed will hurt Thailand as much as Cambodia... very tunnel visioned.

He's only been here for 9 years. He's tattooed to the nines looks exactly like the guy from the neighboring village that just shot somebody over having too many drinks.

What a nut.  Is this for his tik Tok, youtube, or insta?   Stupid decisions like this can result in a gofundme page cause you FAFO.

He appears to be a resident. A naive one at that.  Does not look particularly intelligent either.

That's sweet from patong

"..who has lived in Thailand for nearly nine years with his Thai wife. Speaking in English..."

If he's been in Thailand nine years why is "Mangkud" speaking to Thai media in English?

Cambodia may see the news story as well. Maybe the guy crosses the border one day for some fruit or on a visa run. He is in some risk to country database that's recognized by immigration and is jailed for espionage. Not too far fetched.

No way would I travel to Cambodia ever again after being in a news story like that.

I am also German, I am also married to a Thai woman and have been living in Thailand for 15 years. But it would never occur to me to consider myself so important as to interfere in Thai politics.

What does he expect from it? Thai citizenship, for example? Oh my Buddha!

They should be easy to find....

Every time foreigners showed up at political protests in the past, Thai authorities either deported them, refused future visa renewals, or gave strong warnings. There are many examples. Even if the protest looks peaceful or “local” (like the border issue in this example), the immigration police treat all political activity by foreigners as off-limits. Not a good idea by this German guy. Even if he may have good intentions, he should just stay out of it.

You're referring to the 180 day threshold within a fiscal year, after which one becomes a resident for tax purposes. This has no relationship with immigration or visa status: One can be a tax resident, having accrued 180 days presence in Thailand on tourist visas. Conversely, one can also be a Thai citizen, who is not resident for tax purposes, having spent fewer than the said 180 days on Thai soil in the same year.

I do agree with other members' sentiments: As a foreigner, it's best to stay out of public displays of political affiliation, regardless of your immigration status.

If all foreigners in Thailand would go back to their home country to solve the problems there, there would be almost no foreigners to be found here. Americans not at all!

Resident (180) for definition of tax purposes, what a privilege.

Pay income taxes enjoying nil benefit whilst subject to dual pricing and other discriminations

Would "Halte deine Schnauze" be more appropriate if you were "a Wolfgang"?
