A 28-year-old messenger was critically injured on 15 September 2025 after his motorbike was struck from behind by a car on the elevated road at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok. The collision caused the rider to become lodged on the edge of the ramp, while the car caught fire after the impact. Bystanders used extinguishers before airport firefighters and rescue teams quickly responded to fully extinguish the blaze and secure the area.

The victim, Mr Songkran, had been collecting documents for delivery and was following GPS directions when he mistakenly rode onto the restricted elevated road. Realising the error, he attempted to pull over to the left to turn back, at which point a 48-year-old female driver, returning from a flight, collided with the motorbike. The impact caused him to be thrown onto the edge of the ramp, where his leg became impaled by a flagpole at the base of a streetlight.

Emergency teams from Chularat 9 Hospital and Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue units used specialised equipment to free Mr Songkran from the narrow and dangerous position. He was conscious during rescue but in a serious condition. Firefighters and airport rescue personnel spent several minutes carefully cutting metal and stabilising him to prevent him from falling from the elevated structure.

The female driver reported she had been fatigued from recent travel and momentarily lost control of her car, which then caught fire after the collision. She exited the vehicle safely before the flames spread and was questioned by police at Lat Krabang station. Authorities emphasised that motorcycles are strictly prohibited on this airport elevated route due to the high risk of crashes.

Officials are reviewing the incident and may consider additional signage or barriers to prevent future entry by motorcycles. Mr Songkran remains under critical care, and investigators are examining GPS routing and safety procedures at the airport ramps. Legal proceedings for the driver will follow based on police findings.

It's not that easy to find the route to the airport for motorbikes.

I recently bought my first car in 20 years, having  finally realized the unacceptable risk of local motorbike use. I took a road trip from Jomtien to Korat to visit a sick friend.  Going was easy, a nearly straight run on Rt 331/304 most of the way then Google maps to my final destination.  It was when I tried to use Google Maps to cut from Korat to Chum Phae on the west side of Khon Kaen that I got into big trouble, at one point finding myself on an unpaved farm road in a rain storm.  No way to stop or turn around because I would have sunk up to my axels in mud.  Finally escaped the quagmire but from then on, Google maps was hit or miss.  Descriptions of turns are so vague you often don't see them until they are past.  Going back, sent me on the wrong route to get back-on to 304/331 and I ended-up having to go through Bangkok.  One problem is it's really difficult to get a big picture of where you are and what direction to go.  I realize now how valuable paper maps were in allowing you to get a larger view of a route and where roadways led to.
