A new 200-bed hospital is set to be developed in Don Muang district, northern Bangkok, as part of initiatives to improve healthcare access for vulnerable groups. This announcement was made during the recent Health Assembly of the Northern Bangkok Group. The project has a budget of 1.99 billion baht, and construction will begin next year, aiming for completion by 2030.

This development will be in Si Kan sub-district, overseen by Navamindradhiraj University's Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital, with land donated by Wat Pak Nam temple. The assembly also approved a convention framework targeting support for disadvantaged groups, including the elderly, disabled, and homeless, in seven districts. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving NHCO, BMA, ThaiHealth, and six universities.

Experts like Dr Sunthorn Sunthornchart emphasize the project's role in enhancing accessibility to health services, thereby improving dignity and well-being for disadvantaged citizens. Additionally, Naruemon Nirathorn highlighted the comprehensive public participation process in formulating the plan, ensuring it addresses the needs of the community genuinely.

As northern Bangkok is designated as the pilot area due to its complexity, the project is expected to strengthen social security with improved infrastructure and lower living costs. Dr Wirun Limsawat supports this approach, believing it will effectively demonstrate inclusive healthcare strategies.

Looking forward, the NHCO plans to expand this initiative across all 50 Bangkok districts by the following year, aiming for a widespread impact on urban public health policies. The emphasis remains on creating more inclusive and accessible health services citywide.

Key Takeaways

  • A significant health project in Don Muang district is set to improve services for vulnerable groups.
  • A participatory approach ensures the plan is rooted in community needs.
