A service charge is, frankly, a completely unnecessary fee that has crept into menus through what I can only call the ‘Americanisation’ of dining. Restaurants and other businesses slap it on for a ser

A service charge is a charge for service. If you can't afford it, stay home. Regardless, I do not care about 17 baht.

The rain was coming down in sheets, and so was my luck. I walked into a joint with a sign that promised a "fixed price" for 219 baht. A perfect deal, I thought. The kind of lie you want to believe.

Then came the bill. The waiter, a weasel with a slicked-back smile, laid it on the table like a confession. The number stared back at me: 257 baht. My eyes narrowed, seeing the two-headed monster staring me down—a ten percent shakedown for "service" and a seven percent tribute to the big house.

The fixed price wasn't fixed at all. It was a rigged game, a double-cross more sinister than anything I'd seen in a back alley. A guy could lose his soul in this town, but I'd just lost a whole 38 baht. The real crime, I tell you, wasn't on the streets. It was right here, on a cheap piece of paper, under the flickering neon light.

That's good.   I like it!  In my mind's eye, it's a black and white movie.

Nicely done!  You're ready to pick up the mantle of Raymond Chandler.

As it says – "service charge" – it's for service; you get served in a restaurant. Common all over the World, but some countries only allow all inclusive prices; i.e. inclusive of 10%-15% service charge and what-ever-tax-percentage of vat.

This is why I never use Agoda.com to find a hotel. They quote you a lowball price in the beginning of your search that appears to beat all the competition, then when you go to reserve the room, you discover that they will now add on the 10% service charge and the 7% Vat. Therefore, I always use Booking.com because there are no tricks on that site. In my mind, this sort of gimmick to get customers is obscene and unacceptable.

That's not down to Agoda but down to your settings.

Change to this and you may find it less "obscene and unacceptable".

This must be the first time the poor guy going to a restaurant...

Maybe Talibanland no service charge....

Regarding tipping.

I ask my server if he/she gets to keep the tip or if it's shared.

If it's shared then I ask for their phone number for promptpay and send them a good tip if the service was good.  If they can't do that then the tip is typically 20 baht (which is 20 baht more than most Thais tip).

So it's been a while since you've been in Thailand.

Doing your laundry? Really? Maybe 50 years ago.

A service charge is normally applied in an above average restaurant, say at a 4 or 5 star hotel.

If you don't want to pay or can't afford to pay it, don't eat there. 7/11 doesn't have a service charge and provides free seating on the steps outside.

Grab a beer and have a real night out.

If you mean sex, say sex. We're all grown ups here. To me your post reminds me of the old timers who say that, back in the day, they would take a woman home and she would in fact do the dishes and the laundry next morning.

Before my time unfortunately.

It’s common for restaurants here to deduct the cost of the meal from an employee’s salary if they make a mistake.

For that reason, I will eat the meal if the waiter gets it wrong.

IMHO it’s wrong to deduct the entire cost of the dish when typically around 70% of it is profit margin.

I appreciate the heads-up Treetops, and I'm always willing to admit I made a mistake; however, I have looked over the site very carefully, and I see no place in settings or any other area of the site to choose "Total price per night" on my desktop computer using the URL address for Agoda. It may be on their app, but I don't have it on my phone and don't care to add it. Perhaps you would be kind enough to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

I too use the website given a choice and the setting can be found here, by clicking on the currency symbol, ฿ in my example.  This should take you to the screen shown previously.

Unfortunately it's not +17%. VAT is levied on the base price PLUS the service charge. In simple terms that works out to be 1 x 1.10 x 1.07 = 1.177, or +17.7%.

If VAT is charged against the service charge this is completely illegal. Both service charge and VAT are calculated against the net bill charge.

Incorrect.  If the service charge is mandatory then VAT must be charged on it.  See Section 3.1 of this page from the Revenue Department.

I stand corrected you are absolutely right, what a scam! I will definitely not be paying anymore 10.7% service charges, if they won't agree to remove it before I order they won't get my custom.

2 of us both had a small Chang beer in Hooters Nana Soi 4 . 130 baht a beer so 260 baht should have been the bill . No it was 305 baht with the 17% service and vat added on . When I questioned the bill the waitress said the service charges and vat are shown on the menu  . That was true , printed in very small print in the bottom corner of the menu . No wonder there were very few customers there . Do you think I left a tip ?

If you go to the top of the page and click on the currency icon, you'll see the choice to view the basic price or the total price on Agoda. Booking.com, on the other hand, uses surveillance pricing, which means the price will change depending on a variety of personal factors (location, how you access the site  etc.)

I regard the service charge as a compulsory tip so pay nothing on top.
