5 Ways Technology Has Changed Our Lives in Thailand Forever

Well, hello everyone. I have been lurking here for a long time, so today I finally signed up and thought I would give this cheeky Pub thing a go.

1- While I was queuing for ages at immigration to do my 90 day report, my smartwatch nudged me with breathing exercises after my heart rate spiked. Next thing you know, I am standing there huffing, but thankfully nobody noticed. Bless that watch.

2- While I was in Jomtien getting a foot massage that turned into three beers and a plate of som tam, my smart aircon noticed the afternoon humidity jump and switched to dehumidify mode. Came home and the room felt dry and cool like a five star hotel lobby. Probably the scheduling I set ages ago, but nice all the same.

3- While getting my hair cut on Second Road and arguing with the young, smug barber about whether I am thinning or just “maturing,” my smart-home app pinged to say the rice cooker was on delayed timer so my rice-berry would be ready when I got home. Not exactly Gordon Ramsay, but it does the job.

4- While over on Soi Buakhao getting my skull shined, my robovac back at the flat was quietly vacuuming and mopping the floor with the same fine precision. Two shines at the same time, I reckon.

5- While strolling past Walking Street the other night, my phone’s sound monitoring feature pinged to warn that the ambient noise was getting dangerously loud. Funny imagining my phone trying to protect my ears from the pleasurable chaos, but I carried on anyway.

That’s it. I’m sure there are plenty of other little ways technology has changed our lives without us noticing, but all requires a bit more thought.

Doesn't work for the first one after you've returned from overseas.

Nobody actually has to smoke weed anymore in Thailand to get high and have to seek out the right place to do it. Now you can vape it just about anywhere and nobody can smell anything.

Online porn.

I've never gotten gonorrhea from spending money. Am I doing something wrong?

I've tried very hard to catch gonorrhea during my time in Asia (16 years).

Not managed it, so it's probably not as easy to catch as the anti-sex propaganda would have us believe.

The biggest problem with gonorrhea is that its symptoms are very similar to NSU. As a result, many doctors treat the infection with antibiotics immediately without testing to confirm what it actually is, since treatment is the same either way and waiting for lab results would prolong suffering for a day or two and increase costs for the patient. This means I might have had gonorrhea a few times or maybe never. There is no way to know for sure. Many people who think they might have had the clap are probably in the same situation.

In which case, it's not really a problem!

Keep trying and don't be a quitter. Hopefully, eventually you will get lucky.
