The Thai government has allocated 864 million baht to the Royal Thai Army to enhance border security amidst tensions with Cambodia. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the decision, which was made during a cabinet meeting immediately after his policy address. This funding aims to strengthen the army's preparedness for potential security issues along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The budget approval comes at a time when border issues are a priority, underscoring the need for national sovereignty. While specific allocations for constructing border fencing were not confirmed, the funds will support the armed forces in safeguarding the country. The National Security Council is set to discuss these matters further, which include selecting a new chair for the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) as the current chairman's term concludes.

In response to Cambodia petitioning the International Court of Justice regarding the Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom temples, Anutin affirmed Thailand's commitment to protect its national interests. He stated, "Cambodia has the right to file the case, but Thailand will continue to follow its established protocols," emphasizing Thailand’s firm stance on the issue.

Lt Gen Weerayut Raksin, the new Second Army Region Commander overseeing the northeastern border, assured that Thai troops are prepared and remain vigilant. Despite occasional provocations from Cambodia, Lt Gen Weerayut highlighted the Thai forces' restraint and commitment to avoiding escalation. He succeeded Lt Gen Boonsin, who retired recently.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand allocates 864 million baht to enhance border security with Cambodia.
  • The National Security Council to deliberate on border-related issues.
  • Thailand maintains a firm stance on disputed temples, following protocols.

It would be better to let Cambodia have it for 864m.

I know which country would be doing best from the deal.

And the army could return to the barracks to do whatever an overmanned army does.

Build a wall , Cambodia will pay for it , Oh I forgot somebody tried that before. didn't work...
