Authorities in Chiang Rai have arrested a suspected trafficker and rescued three individuals believed to be victims of prostitution, including a 15-year-old girl. The operation took place late on 2 October in Mueang district as part of a provincial crackdown on human trafficking. Officials confirmed the teenager is a Myanmar national.

The intervention followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen who reported a broker arranging underage sex services via the Line application. Customers were allegedly shown photos of girls to choose from, with prices ranging between 1,800 and 3,000 baht. Victims reportedly received around 1,000 baht per transaction, while the remainder went to the broker.

Under the direction of Governor Ratthaphon Naradisorn and senior provincial officials, a multi-agency task force including police, social workers, immigration officers and child protection services conducted the operation. A covert agent arranged a meeting, leading officers to a hotel in Mueang district. The establishment was not implicated in the offences.

At the hotel, three victims were found, one of whom was confirmed to be 15 years old. She reportedly entered prostitution to earn money for food and to send funds back home. Authorities are still verifying the ages of the other individuals involved.

One suspected trafficker was arrested and initially charged with procuring persons for prostitution and encouraging a minor to behave inappropriately. Officials said the case will be referred to a multidisciplinary team for victim assessment and to determine further legal proceedings.

The raid formed part of the “Chiang Rai Farsaai” initiative, ordered by the provincial governor in line with national anti-trafficking policies set by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Ministry of Interior. Officials pledged ongoing measures to prevent exploitation and provide protection for vulnerable groups.

Hang those caught trafficking the underage girls by the balls outside in the sun for a day or two, that will save the expenses of feeding and housing them.
