Authorities in Sa Kaeo province have arrested six Thai nationals who admitted to opening mule bank accounts for a Chinese-run call scam network in Poipet. The group, four men and two women, was intercepted on 2 October when officers from the Aranyaprathet Task Force and Border Patrol Police Company 1202 stopped a white Toyota in Pa Rai subdistrict, Aranyaprathet. None of the six carried ID cards or passports and officers found 20 Thai bank accounts and multiple e-wallets in their possession.

Investigations revealed the group had been lured via Facebook with offers of work as online gambling administrators. They were told they could rent out mule bank accounts for 10,000 baht each, which persuaded them to cross into Cambodia. However, upon arrival they were taken to a Chinese-owned factory where their phones and ID cards were confiscated.

The six were then forced to undergo facial scans before their accounts were frozen by authorities. Once the accounts were rendered useless, the Chinese handlers reportedly told them to return home. On 1 October, they were given only 3,500 baht each as compensation and abandoned near Ban Ang Sila opposite the Thai border.

The group managed to walk across the frontier via an illegal natural crossing before arranging a hired vehicle to collect them at Ban Ang Sila School. It was there that local police, already tipped off by Khlong Luek Police Station, intercepted them at a checkpoint.

All six were transferred to Khlong Luek Police Station for legal proceedings. The case highlights continuing recruitment of Thais for mule account schemes linked to cross-border scam operations in Cambodia.
