  • The THai Baht is only a part, which indeed makes Thai holidays very expensive, but there is more wrong in handling tourism by Thailand and people will avoid this country more and more, It is going on

I think the way forward is three fold....   1. Hike the arrivals tax to 500B 2. Increase the cost of hotel rooms with an additional local tax 3. Put up the price of alcohol....beer

Yes, Thailand, compared to other destinations, used to be a medium-quality, but inexpensive destination. Now it's just one of many similar destinations in SE Asia, but one that is more expensive than

OMG, you said you gave up, so keep your promise and give up already.

I was replying to #2, which is BS. There is no additional local tax on hotel rooms.

That's what it is marketed as. Either way, I really like the hotel and have stayed there many times before.

DOH!!!!

baht hit an all time high against Yen 2 weeks ago and I was spending my baht against yen in Japan fo sho... just before it knee jerked down. Got my value.

Japanese are scared an incoming missile from Cambo will fall upon them in Bangkok, or an earth quake will make the hotel fall upon them.... oh so scary! ha. Silly kid mentality. Jpns are zero risk people, scardy cats.

It’s not just the baht; Thailand is relatively an expensive destination nowadays at the main places… Bangkok, Phuket, Samui. There is not much of the new or different to experience. Also too much uncertainty at governmental level. People don’t want the hassle.

I don't think the strength of the Thai baht makes a big difference 😕

It's the reputation that Thailand is getting particularly in Phuket and Pattaya for

Troubles in the bars people getting ripped off could go on

Future tourists are reading this online and think there are better places to spend my money Vietnam comes to mind cheap and safe

100B is fine, but converting to the price of pint always shocks me.......still £4.50 in real money.

Were you drinking that beer when you made this post? 🍺 100 baht is £2.29.

Where is the problem here that might be keeping tourists away?

I booked the exact hotel room in Bangkok two months apart. The second time, the price was more than 3% higher (no currency fluctuation involved), so over one year it's probably +18-20%! No wonder, tourists pick cheaper destinations...

HELLO>>>>>A PINT>>>>>DOH

What were you drinking when you failed so miserably to read my post correctly??????

I think it's a whole combination of things that are effecting tourism in Thailand and tourism from Japan. I think the language is a huge factor, the lack of people who are truly proficient in the English language is quite low, and I'm sure very few Thais speak proficient Japanese. The increase in prices is not helping, when Japanese people considered Thailand expensive you know prices have gone up, the hotel prices are much higher than they should be, the Thai baht is much higher than it should be, and the authorities never learned any lessons that were plaguing the nation pre-covid.

The list goes on. It's all good by me. I think as far as most expats are concerned the fewer tourists, the better.

The baht's appreciation against a weakening  <fill in currency of choice> has made trips to Thailand more expensive for <fill in nationality of choice> tourists, hampering the recovery of tourism from <fill in country of choice>

Says it all, in one sentence. It's always good to have something to blame the numbers on. Numbers: the TAT numbers of "fantastic increase" or "devastating decrease" – entirely depending on what day you read them.

As a PS: hotel rates and costs for meals (etc.) in Japan are skyhigh in comparison. And Japan has a lot of tourists. Just saying.

As a resident of Japan, here is my two yen worth;

1. Price really isn't much of an issue for Japanese. Quality of experience IS.

2. Thailand is rapidly acquiring a reputation as being a bit grotty, dirty, etc. and this scares away family travellers.

3. Weed is NOT an impetus. It actually is a detriment.

4. There is less business travel, and fewer expats who are transferred by their companies to live in Thailand as well.

5. The various scandals- scam centers, kidnapping, random crime, do make it on the news here and do have an impact.

Yes, it amazes me too how the Thais put up with it!

That's why they chase the Chinese, to correct the in-balance

There is truth in every one of your points but point 3 has to be the most valid.

Thailand  keeps saying that it wants to be a family destination but no one (if aware) are going to go to a destination, with their family, that openly sells weed everywhere.

Regardless of the fact its not openly in sight, as a parent you just would not do it. Unless of course your a pothead.

Their losses will ultimately outweigh the gains

Nevertheless, it's a nice hotel that I really enjoy. It's also very good value, and in a nice, quiet area right on the beach.

Very true. Even my wife (Japanese) notices and it really bugs her. We have a condo in a relatively drug-free area, but any time we go to Pattaya for a meal, she hates the stench. Plus the low class of people that are attracted to the drug trade. As a Japanese she is aghast at the possible impact on children and families.

You all make good points. What about the police raids on bars and clubs or other venues with your holiday ruined by 50 cops demanding you stop drinking and pee into cups and show passports? I am most certain when reading this in the news weekly that tourist are flocking to enjoy the thrill of harassment by the police.

Not the issue.

The marijuana laws have decimated Thailand in terms of repuatation. Mainly because it's being abused, and smuggling - especially by Bendirom Brits.

True. Between the drugs, the scam centers, and the spat with Cambodia, Japanese are reluctant to see Thailand as a holiday destination.  Lots of other options exist.
