Greek Yogurt & Cottage Cheese

Featured Replies

Greek Yogurt - costs 190 Baht for a small tub compared to 65 Baht for the regular yogurt. Tastes better than regular yogurt, has more protein. But is it worth the extra money?

Cottage Cheese - do supermarkets have cottage cheese here? haven't seen it.

Not the real thing......but as long as you think it is.........     The clue is in the price.

Depends where you are shopping, Those prices appear very expensive, Tops, Big C Makro etc sell a 4 pack of regular yogurt for 50-60 baht, and Greek yogurt for a little more 60-80 baht.

Most supermarkets have cottage cheese

Regarding cottage cheese, Foodland used to stock but I haven't looked for it in a while.

Thai brands vs Western brands maybe?

So you eat Thai brands? Are they good enough?

But I doubt Thai brands make Greek Yogurt because maybe locals don't eat it much.

Makro has cottage cheese. Like 129 baht for a tub.

You will find all the major brands of milk, yogurt etc, like Meiji, Dutchie are all made in Thailand, and they both make Greek/Set yogurt.

I'd say the OP has quoted 500 gram tub.

Mejii do a Greek yoghurt plain and one with mixed berries for 89 baht in a 500 gram tub... available almost everywhere 😉

Just look out for 5 products available at Makro, Foodland, Villa and others. They are not always in stock, if they are available I always buy in bulk.

1. Chobani greek style joghurt 1 kg 299 Baht, there are several different versions

2. Alli cottage cheese 400 gr, packing looks a bit similar to Yolida (manufacturer is the same company(

3. Del Casaro Ricotta 400 gr  (not really greek jogurt, but excellent on bread)

4. Caroline greek style joghurt 500 gr fat free

5. Meji greek style joghurt in different sizes (I personally prefer 1-4)

You can make your own cottage cheese in 15 minutes, with just a jug of milk from the supermarket and a few tablespoons of lemon juice. Mix together, wait 5-10 minutes for the curds to form. Strain through a piece of cheesecloth, and you have half a kilo of cottage cheese. Add some salt, and if you wish, other herbs.
We've been doing this for years!  Garlic and basil, just like store-bought 'Rondele!'

Or buy Rennet enzyme online, mix warmed milk with a bit of Yolida and let the bacteria do the work overnight. Then strain.

7/11 shelves would suggest they do.

@Peterw42 When did Yolida Low fat Set yoghurt become Greek Yogurt? No. It has not and it is not.

Del Casero used to do a 400 gram tub for 99 baht...which flew off the shelves. They increased the price to 165 baht, which helped it to stay on the shelf. No one likes greed.

I guess the OP is referring to Dairy Home Greek yoghurt. Don't buy Low Fat Greek yoghurt, as it's just tasteless. Real Greek yoghurt is rich in fat and protein...and tasty.
Meiji Greek style yoghurt is made with all kinds of milk products...haven't tried it personally.

@LennyW Which Greek yoghurt is on 7-11 shelves?

Yes, Dairy Home brand.

I believe it's organic, so maybe that's why it's a bit expensive.

You're saying it's low fat?

I didn't see any other brands of Greek Yogurt. I will need to check more carefully.

@save the frogs Dairy Home have two options for Greek yoghurt. One normal and the other low fat. The Normal one has a red label. The low fat version  a mix of white, gray and red.

As I understand it, Greek yogurt is just plain yogurt with the whey squeezed out. You get more protein because you are eating more of the solids, but you get less calcium per ounce since it is mostly in the whey.

If you take a look at the ingredient label of this Meji Greek style yoghurt you will notice that it is not real yoghurt but a mix of different ingredients. The taste is not bad though.

That's what I was afraid of with some of these cheaper brands.

Thanks for the heads up.

Great if you like that one. For me personally I prefer Chobani which also offers a low fat version in addition.

I doubt the Meiji one is 'very close', though to be honest, I haven't tried it, as the ingredient list doesn't inspire confidence.

I prefer made with fresh milk, rather than reconstituted milk products.

Milk and milk products 12.6% (skimmed milk powder 5.1%, whole milk powder 5%, concentrated milk protein 2%, butterfat 0.5%), milk cream 12.6%, cow's milk 10%, produced using Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilis, Lactococcus lactis and Bifidobacterium lactis cultures.

@msbkk Chobani has nothing to do with Greek yoghurt, even though it purports to be genuine American Greek yoghurt. Real Greek yoghurt is almost solid.

Farmers Union also a bit strange in taste and consistency.

Makro has CC, and yes, also silly priced, I think ...

image.png.d3d8baec2c943363098947fee14f257f.png

Could just make your own CC & GY, though don't know how cost effective that would be.  I'm a milk kefir guy myself, and rarely eat yoghurt.

Could buy the large yoghurt at Makro, then 'hang' in cheese cloth' to drain off the excess whey, and have your GY.  Basically all GY is, strained regular yoghurt.

Even make your own yoghurt, as easy enough.   I have in the past, and wife used to.  Just can't be bothered any more as don't eat that much.  Wife use to keep on going, and make Cream Cheese from the yoghurt, and actually pretty decent stuff.

I do sometimes make my own cottage cheese and own greek style yoghurt. The problem is that you need quite  a lot of milk to get a reasonable amount of own product. And milk is not so cheap to buy. The cottage cheese in your photo for 129 Baht is in fact not really so overpriced.

I agree. The cottage cheese is a cheaper way to top up protein intake than the Greek Yogurt.

But Greek Yogurt is damn good, so a combination of both is better.

Okay @BritManToo and @petermik, I decided that since I had earlier refused to try the Meiji Greek Style yoghurt, then it wasn't fair for me to make a judgement as to the quality. So I purchased 500 gram tubs of each variety...

It's definitely not Greek yoghurt and it doesn't taste much like greek yoghurt. A way to describe it would be to think of an ice cream you like, such as Haagen Daz and then think of those inexpensive soft serve cones that you can buy from the chains and franchises, that have a curious lack of the creamy taste and depth of real milk. Or ice cream that is filled with air to make it fluffy. The taste is thin and not creamy.
