Pol Gen Permpoon Chidchob, formerly an education minister, has been appointed as an adviser to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. His appointment was approved by the cabinet alongside several other political officials. Permpoon is the younger brother of Newin Chidchob, influential within the Bhumjaithai Party.

Previously, Permpoon faced criticism for his role as education minister, especially from the defunct Move Forward Party. The controversy stemmed from his involvement in the Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya case, a fatal hit-and-run incident in 2012. As an assistant to the national police chief, Permpoon didn't object to the dropping of charges against Vorayuth.

While Pol Gen Permpoon faced unspecified disciplinary action, he was not indicted in the 2024 case review. Two senior prosecutors were jailed in April for their misconduct in the same case. The remaining charge against Vorayuth for reckless driving causing death will expire in September 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • Pol Gen Permpoon becomes an adviser to PM Anutin Charnvirakul.
  • His past role in the “Boss” case stirred controversy and criticism.
  • Vorayuth's remaining charge expires in 2027, with prior jail sentences for others involved.
