The Bangkok

?"Metropolitan Administration is taking measures to manage rising water levels, assuring residents there will be no repeat of the 2011 floods. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt highlighted the city's readiness, emphasizing that current water levels are significantly lower than those experienced in 2011. Strategies include sandbag barriers and strengthened embankments to tackle challenges from northern runoff, high tides, and heavy rainfall.

In recent assessments of the Chao Phraya River, alongside media, Chadchart confirmed ongoing collaborations with key water authorities. Major dams in the Chao Phraya Basin are currently within manageable capacity limits, collectively able to store 2.04 billion cubic metres of water. Water flow rates at critical stations, such as C.298 in Pathum Thani, remain below dangerous levels recorded in 2011.

The upcoming high tides from October 9 to 12 may raise river levels. However, these are not expected to breach permanent flood defenses. Rainfall influenced by a weakening low pressure from Tropical Storm Matmo is predicted to cause scattered heavy rain in Bangkok between October 6 and 14.

Preventive strategies include routine inspections of flood barriers, lowering canal levels, and preparing drainage systems. The city has fortified 80 kilometres of permanent flood barriers and addressed vulnerable zones, completing sandbagging at key locations. Emergency teams and mobile pumps are on standby for prompt response.

For residents outside flood barriers, district offices are providing necessary support with sandbags and temporary structures. This aims to protect approximately 320 households across 11 communities at risk.

Experts assert that the proactive measures implemented by Bangkok authorities, combined with the current water management capabilities, provide a safeguard against serious flooding incidents. Looking forward, continuous monitoring and adaptive responses are planned to ensure Bangkok stays resilient to potential water threats in the coming weeks.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok has reinforced flood defenses to prevent a repeat of the 2011 floods.
  • Major dams in the region remain within safe capacity limits, mitigating immediate risks.
  • Emergency measures are in place to assist vulnerable communities outside flood barriers.

It's always unnerved me when they gave their assurances!

We didn't take help from the Dutch, the preeminent experts of urban flood control on planet Earth when it was offered for free, and we haven't done anything to build an efficient dike system around the city, but you have my word, and that should be enough to give you confidence that there will not be flooding.

That's an AN urban myth, thanks for perpetuating it. They did ask for help from the Dutch, they did take their advice, and they have implemented many programs based on it.

"Assurances" from politicians. :whistling:

He mentions the monitoring site in Pathum Thani, the marker at the top of the pole is 2011.

We have our sandbags ready to install. As usual they came in kit form, a truck load of sand and a roll of bags.

For up to the second (ish) data and links to monitoring sites look here: -

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

"The city sits only 1.5 meters above sea level. By 2030, flooding frequency and intensity are expected to surge. By 2050, without large-scale interventions, Bangkok could be entirely submerged."

  • rising sea levels caused by global warming,
  • steady land subsidence of 2 centimeters per year — the city is built on soft, waterlogged ground,
  • rapid coastal erosion in the Chao Phraya delta, pushing the shoreline closer each year.

Whether the flood is deep or not will depend on the release from the largest dams, Bhumibol and Sirikit, not because of the Governor of Bangkok. In 2011 things got worse in October when the dams released their water.

"preparing drainage systems," is he saying it wasn't done before wet season....so, same as every previous year.
