A 73-year-old former ranger has been arrested in Phatthalung province after fatally attacking his 70-year-old brother-in-law with a machete while drunk. The suspect calmly surrendered to police, telling them he had been waiting for arrest and wanted to clean up first because he “knew he was going to jail.” The victim later died in hospital from severe head and hand injuries.

The incident occurred on 8 October 2025 in Moo 5, Khok Muang subdistrict, Khao Chaison district. Police, led by Pol Lt Col Channarong Sansang, were called to the scene following reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found Mr. Khiew, the 73-year-old suspect, intoxicated but cooperative. He admitted to attacking his brother-in-law, Mr. Wirot and led police to the hidden machete used in the assault.

Witnesses told police that the suspect, known locally for his daily drinking habit and volatile temper, had walked from his home to the victim’s hut about 100 metres away. Without warning, he struck Wirot multiple times as he slept, inflicting deep head wounds and severing one of his right-hand fingers. Relatives who witnessed the attack rushed to intervene and called emergency services, but the victim succumbed to his injuries at Phatthalung Hospital.

During questioning, Mr. Khiew refused to explain his motive, saying only that he and his brother-in-law “did not get along.” Locals confirmed that the suspect often drank heavily and quarrelled with family members, but no prior violent incidents had been reported. After his arrest, he remained calm and compliant throughout police procedures.

Authorities have charged the suspect with murder and are preparing to forward the case to prosecutors. Police said the motive likely stemmed from a long-standing personal dispute exacerbated by alcohol abuse. The weapon has been seized as evidence and Mr. Khiew remains in custody awaiting trial.
