Bangkok Launches Smoking Crackdown to Improve Air Quality

Featured Replies

Just because you can get away with it doesn't mean it's OK. Most western countries don't allow it - gee, I wonder why? - so when you come here you think it's okay to stink up someone else's air. It's not OK. Take it where it doesn't mess with the health of innocent people. Take it away from crowds, away from bars and restaurants, anywhere that someone might have to breathe in your stink. Do you like sewer gas? That's what it's like for non smokers.

  • Yes refuse the vaping to be legal and let million cars and motorcycles drive with many of them blacksmoke.. the few cigarettes will make the difference

  • When will they crackdown on the yearly  upcoming burning of the fields and forests  which causes much more harm.

  • If only there was a safer alternative to smoking tobacco. Something that still gave the pleasure without the toxic second hand smoke, maybe exhaling just water vapor instead, then Thailand could ban i

Never in my 30 years have I seen a single farmer compost sugarcane leaves.

Why not  ?

Why haven't I seen it?.....just never have.

Why don't they do it?.......the labour involved would be astronomical in terms of man-hours and costs.......then using the compost carries the same effort and costs.

Really.....we have, as family, 200 acres of sugarcane.

Every leaf is burned, as they are in all neighbouring fields as far as the eye can see.

If the farmers don't burn....what are they doing with the mountains of leaves?

This year take a visit to the farms and see for yourself that the sugarcane is loaded with leaves attached when it is cut by hand and sent to the mill. Machines (Harvesters) cut and the leaves are removed and then sent to the mill. Take a visit to a mill and see the 10 wheel trucks as they arrive. Do you burn your 200 Rai and if so, you may get a visit from the police IF the police are enforcing the No Burn.

Again.........in 30 years.....I have never seen a sugarcane lorry loaded with the leaves intact........and we live 1km from one of the largest loading stations in Western Isaan.

I promise I will keep my out next Feb/Mar.

Fag smoking is something that should conducted in private between cosenting adults.  Sitting in a bar or open bar, behind some inconsiderate smoker, leaves you stinking of their waste puffed smoke, not to mention the smouldering fag which spends 90% of its 'life' sitting on the ashtray polluting the air !!

Well here is another way of looking at things, bars could decide whether they are "smoking" or "non smoking" and clearly indicate this at the entrance,  Smokers and Non smokers can then decide whether or not they wish to enter and both groups can enjoy themselves.

It might also put an end to this incessant childish arguing on the matter.

That however, negates the actual aim of the whole program, which is to slowly nudge the population towards not smoking.

It has been staggeringly successful in the UK.

Will, many farmers have sugarcane leaves for compost. When they cut for replant they Do Not Burn as that would kill the Sugarcane Eye. The new cane will simply come up through the dead leaves for new growth. In turn the dead leaves stop a large number of weeds from growing in the cane.

As I have been told......and of course this could be codswallop (but it is via SWMBO).............

..........if they leave the leaves on the ground the leaves can harbour borers, fungi, and bacteria, especially if not managed properly then integrated pest management may be needed to offset this. In cooler or drier conditions, leaves may decompose slowly, potentially interfering with ratoon crop emergence. Thick leaf mats can clog machinery or hinder uniform regrowth if not spread evenly.

So for many....they get the matches out......(their) problem solved.

Will, where did you get your cut and paste from you listed in your comment?  So, what do the farmers do when they cut the leaves off for replant. For sure they do not Burn. I speak from experience having farms with Sugar Cane along with Thai friends who have the same. I have nothing else to say on the topic so to each their own. Burning Is Not OK.

Most sensible comment so far.Let the bar owners decide if their outdoor areas permit smokers. Obviously no smoking inside.

To be honest I don't agree with adults being nudged towards or away from anything, especially by governments.  give them the information and let them decide for themselves.

The incidence of smoking in the UK has indeed been reduced, partly through education, partly through societal trends and mainly by making them so expensive by increasing the tax levy

But have those responsible for this really thought it through, less smokers equals less tax revenue.  less smokers, means people will live longer,  people will grow older , but  will still suffer from chronic diseases, in fact the longer they live  more and more chronic diseases will emerge,

. This  will be just as costly to treat as cancer, but with a reduction in tax revenue and a huge increase in people now using the NHS who do not contribute the cost will be much higher

~I heard that somebody, Bill Gates I think,  helped fund ,or develop some programme to eradicate malaria in some african countries. I believe  it was quite successful, people were not dying from malaria as much , although subsequently deaths from starvation and poverty  increased as a result

Let people smoke inside if they want to as well, nobody is forced to enter. What's the problem? it's all adults , up to them

It is claimed......and I CBA doing the sources thing............. that the net benefit in the reduction of smoking in the UK is around £2.4 billion annually.

But the buses and trucks are totally ok?

Most of them have been running on LPG for years, but, go ahead and post  either an old photo or one of the exceptions

Maybe stop allowing 30 year old buses and trucks on the roads and in the city center

Trucks are regulated in Bangkok as to the hours that they can operate and most buses have been using LPG for years, as have many trucks.

Will, what do the farmers do with the small leaves that are chopped up and blown back onto the farm when using Harvesters to cut and load the Cane? Does Nong Bua Daeng use Harvesters or do the farms have too many rocks on the farm for Harvester use?

I CBA as well so  I'll take your word for it

Lets just  hope that money doesn't get wasted and  goes towards keeping our illegals in the comfort that they expect and have become accustomed to

Cigarette smoking contributing to pollution is another Thai brain joke analysis.
Motorcycle no mufflers and old vehicles are majority of the problem cause

Not reading the OP is "another AN-poster brain joke [sic]" issue...

"Bangkok authorities have announced a stricter enforcement of public smoking laws to safeguard residents and tourists from secondhand smoke. Health advocate Dr. Prakit Vathesatogkit and Chayanan Sithibusaya of the Tobacco Products Control Office met with Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to address indoor air pollution caused by cigarette smoke.

No mention of cigarettes contributing to air pollution in the OP.  Very few motorbikes and old vehicles are operated indoors.

...that, these days, and for years, have been running on LPG but some people "are so thick and love to blame" innocent parties!

Improuve air quality in banning smoking !!?? That is the biggest joke of the year.

Reduce the number of private vehicles. Stop all the illegal burning of thrase or crops further north or all around Hua Hin. Develop proper public transport 24/7 and not only for Bangkok but also for other popular cities.

Banning smoking for public health ? for sure. But banning it on the excuse to improuve air quality is total BS...🙏

The WHO has lost the plot. Smog season in bkk is causing so many health problems.

Naaaaaaaa it'll be fine.

No not even blue smoke.

It's necessarily the old vehicles - the main culprits are the black smoke-emitters, the ones who have chosen to have their engine chipped to increase the fuel pressure to gain more power.

There is... i have a prescription for Nicorette spray. I also have had it for their Nicorette gum. Both are obtainable in Thailand if you know where to go to get them.
