Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), together with the United States and the Wi-Fi Alliance, has initiated discussions to leverage the 6GHz spectrum, aiming to boost the country's digital economy. These discussions encompassed trials at Ramathibodi Hospital, revealing significant advancements in network performance using the full 6GHz band. Results showed data throughput more than doubled, and latency was reduced by 400%, highlighting potential benefits for virtual and distance learning.

The Wi-Fi Alliance conducted these tests in conjunction with Ramathibodi Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine at Mahidol University. Findings from the trials suggest that utilizing the full 6GHz spectrum can substantially enhance internet-dependent educational activities. The discussions further included the economic implications, forecasting a potential contribution of over 1.8 trillion baht to Thailand’s economy by 2030 through the spectrum's usage.

Additionally, the talks touched on implementing an Automated Frequency Coordination system to manage spectrum use effectively in high-traffic areas. Dr Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck, NBTC Chairman, stressed the importance of evaluating strategies for 6GHz utilization with a focus on public interest, indicating readiness for collaborative spectrum development.

Representatives from various sectors, such as the US embassy, the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance, and global tech firms like HPE Aruba, Meta, and Cisco, participated in the discussions. The Wi-Fi Alliance also affirmed that equipment compatible with WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 technologies is prepared for deployment, although the upper part of the 6GHz spectrum is still undergoing tests for telecom applications.

A ministry source disclosed that the US has suggested Thailand fully open its telecom market during tariff negotiations, pressing for a defined WiFi frequency standard that includes the upper 6GHz band.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand explores the 6GHz spectrum for digital economic growth.
  • Tests show significant improvements in data throughput and latency.
  • Full 6GHz band use could add over 1.8 trillion baht to the economy by 2030.
