A Belarusian model and singer has reportedly been murdered and her organs harvested after being trafficked to a scam compound in Yangon, Myanmar—an incident that has sent shockwaves through diplomatic and human rights circles.

Vera Kravtsova, 26, had travelled to Bangkok in search of modelling work but was lured across the border into Myanmar on 20 September. There, she was forced into a romance scam operation, posing as a woman online to entice foreign men into fraudulent investments. When she resisted and failed to meet performance quotas, she was sold to an organ trafficking ring and killed in early October. Her body was cremated, and her family was later contacted by the perpetrators, who demanded US$500,000 for the return of her ashes.

The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the incident and is now supporting Kravtsova’s family. Her mother, reportedly in contact with the scammers, has negotiated the return of the ashes without payment and intends to travel to Myanmar to retrieve them.

This case casts a grim spotlight on the scale of human trafficking in Myanmar. A 2023 UN report estimates that around 120,000 victims—primarily from Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, and Eastern Europe—are currently held in scam compounds across the country. Many are coerced into digital fraud operations under threat of violence, with some facing even darker fates.

Kravtsova’s death underscores the brutal reality behind the region’s illicit cybercrime networks, where human lives are traded as disposable assets. Her story is a chilling reminder of the urgent need for international cooperation to dismantle these compounds and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Horrifying. Hope she didn't suffer much.

Both Myanmar and Cambodia are the worst types of the third-world countries.

That's too broad a statement. You'll find mostly lovely people in both countries. Truth is that "governments" are rotten to the core and allow the scam centre operations. Most certainly complicit with criminal gangs from other countries.

The OP is so sad. Poor young lady must have been terrified. RIP.

IMO Cambodia is not a third world country - I have now lived 6 years in Siem Reap in a modern apartment!

Have you visited recently or just commentating from the top of your head?

During and after Covid, major infrastructure projects were completed in Siem Reap. I will not elaborate but this photo gives an idea of today's experience and shows the new Angkor Ferris Wheel

I only visited once in 2022, and that was enough. Especially those border guards who tried to extort a bribe from me, holding me for several hours at the border. You also have to consider the current situation between Thailand and Cambodia, the recent murders of Koreans, call centers and much more. But of course, you can stay in your condo and pretend everything is fine. Personally, I’m not going back to those areas anytime soon under any circumstances.
