A German woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after their motorcycle collided with a pickup truck in Phang Nga Province on 18 October 2025. The fatal crash occurred at around 17:20 on Phetkasem Road near the U-turn in front of Ban Pak Weep School, Kuek Kak Subdistrict, Takua Pa District.

Police and rescue teams from Khao Lak Station and Kuek Kak Rescue Unit arrived to find a motorcycle, registration from Phang Nga, lying damaged in the middle of the road. Nearby was the body of Mrs. Petra Suhlte, a German national, who died instantly at the scene. Her husband, Mr. Martin Josef Maria Suhlte, also from Germany and had been driving the motorcycle, suffered severe injuries and was transported to Khao Lak Medical Centre for urgent treatment.

The other vehicle involved was an Isuzu pickup truck, registration from Phang Nga, driven by Mr. Somkid, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Initial investigations by Pol. Col. Jesada Janphum, Superintendent of Khao Lak Police Station, and Pol. Lt. Col. Rungroj Jitrakson, the investigating officer, determined that the pickup truck was travelling towards Thamueang District at a speed of around 100 kilometres per hour. As it approached the U-turn near Ban Pak Weep School, the motorcycle carrying the couple tried to cross the lanes to reach the turning, leading to a collision.

Authorities recorded evidence at the scene and took Mr. Somkid in for further questioning at Khao Lak Police Station, with an alcohol test coming back negative. Traffic investigators and forensic officers are reviewing witness statements, vehicle damage and CCTV footage to confirm the sequence of events and determine whether any legal charges will be filed.

Police confirmed that the investigation will continue once Mr. Martin’s condition stabilises and a full statement can be taken. Local authorities plan to conduct a safety review of U-turn points along Phetkasem Road to assess visibility and traffic management issues.

Sorry but motorcycle rider not looking properly....should have waited until the road was clear......RIP to the innocent lady :wai:

I understand the German guy did not survive either but to be clear that is not confirmed. I came past an hour later, always terribly sad when you hear news like this but the impact when you see a covered body is completely  different.  RIP

Thankfully we have video confirming it wasnt the Thais fault or the usual suspects would be along Thai bashing as they do.

It was good driving by the Thai to cross into the other lane avoiding crashing into the median strip.

Tragic.

Don't ride a motorbike in Thailand. There are many cars to rent.

A fatal error by the motorcycle rider.

He should not ride at 100 Kph when approaching a U turn. A strictly enforced limit of 40k or 50k should be enforced.

Had never seen U turns before coming to Thailand. Only roundabouts.

If I never braked while driving a car my kill count would be pretty high. Of course the MB messed up tragically, but the truck had time to do some braking way before the hit.

Unknown whether the rider had a mc license or experience, in any case it should be mandated not to rent out bikes unless one has a mc license/endorsement and with that, holding the renters to some measure of financial accountability may save some tourists lives.

Exactly I hate these U-turns so much. Thai's can't figure out you can't allow drivers to go 90k where people are trying to cross the road or make U-turns.

I like the Thai U-Turns, if used properly they help the flow of straight through traffic, as opposed to Roundabouts, the U-Turners are the ones who should take the most care if wanting to make that manoeuvre, as all on going traffic should have priority.

Sadly 1 dead and 1 maybe dead or critically injured due to carelessness, RIP.

U-turns in Thailand seem very dangerous.  2 opposing traffic flows using the same u-turn.  U-turn lanes for opposing traffic would be much safer if they were 150-200 meters apart.

When riding in Thailand you need to be constantly checking behind in your mirror and glance over shoulder, inexperienced in local conditions, and pickup driver speeding at 5pm in a built up area also a large contributor between fatality or a trip to hospital

Clearly bad driving by the motor cyclist. Having said that there are way too many u-turns on main roads in Thailand.

I wonder what are the stats. for Farang drivers dying in a bike accident caused by the rider, as to whether or not they hold an International  bike licence or had no bike licence at all?  If it's the latter where they had no license then heavily fine the rental shop if the bike was rented of which I believe their is already a Thai law for that. Correct me if I am wrong.

Another sad case of tourists who should not have been allowed to be driving a motorcycle in the first place.  Poor driver skills and obviously at fault.

These U-turns are catastrophic. They should install roundabouts. That would end the need to cut across sometimes several lanes. It would end slow moving traffic in what are effectively outside lanes ahead of the turn. It would also force all traffic to slow down for the roundabouts. They would focus drivers more and reduce general traffic speed also limiting the serious effects of any accidents.

On major motorway like highways there should be neither U-turns nor roundabouts. Miss your turn, go to the next or build slip lanes and U-bridges like with the rail lines now.

Better than killing or dying. Though in Thailand sadly maybe not cheaper ...?

On another note looking at all the motorbike dead, fact is that you can be the world's best, safest, most talented and experienced rider but if you get hit at 100mph by a drunken car/truck driver YOU are the crunch zone - and probably dead. As best I can I avoid the things like the plague.

Terrible split minute decision by an inexperienced cycle driver takes two more lives.  RIP…

I suspect most faring motocy drivers have no license and no training. Occasionally there is a 'crackdown' on the rental shops.

And ther's too many impatient drivers, they are the ones who couses the accidents in a u-turn. they just can't wait for the oncomming traffic.
