I wonder what happens if you politely decline to be photographed?

Happened to me about 4 years back. Apparently they just wanted pictures of themselves to send to the boss to show how hard working they are.

  • When someone says they are immigration police, at least ask politely for their immigration credentials. Why would anyone take your picture in public? You have to be wary.

face recognition, yes.

They need sh*t load of images to run against current database to see recognition ratio.

Wouldn't they want his name so they can check against the results? Otherwise seems half assed to me.......

How would I know? These guys just took my photo. They didn't ask for anything else.

Did they touch your nether regions?  The police will ask you to point to it on a doll.

How can one be sure they are not any scammers posing as Thai Immigration with phony jackets and badges that are very easily available all over ?  With Ai all over now,  having one's photo in the wrong hands could end up a risky venture...

Yes, that would be my first thought, distrusting and cynical person that I am.

Similar at my condo… three guys who seemed legit said they were checking foreigners across the south for illegal working/overstay etc. They sent the office staff to bring foreigners down to them. Went through passport with a fine toothed comb, saying they were checking if immigration office was doing its job properly. Hmm

Never thought of that...but good point...I agree.

They seemed esp interested in IO signatures on visas/extensions.

Its not a new system. There are a number of imm officers tasked with "monitoring" foreigners in the county for trouble makers and doing random checks. They take pics to be able to show their supervisors they are "working", much like the traffic police take selfies at their assigned post and then go off and do whatever. You will probably see more of this as thats part of their increased patrols to address foreign shinnanagins.

my photo would be sent to their boss at Soi 5 in Jomtien. They did not request my name nor did they ask for ID.

It would be embarrassing if big boss got your photo, after looking through their database you were found to be a pedophile or similar wanted by an organisation like.. Asio, FBI or Mi5

I was told I didn't have to have my photo taken if I didn't want to. I consented because that is all they asked for and they can just add it to their already large collection of my photos that they have accrued over the years.

Congratulations, your photo is about to go on a poster for whatever crimes the plod can't solve :whistling:

Me also, but not by immigration.. i was driving to my home in the mountains and they were on the mountain road coming towards me. They actually pulled in front of me on the road and blocked my passage... then 3 local police got out and came to me. All they wanted was a picture of me with them. i consented and continued home.

The result is not a "guessing game" but "Yes/No" in recognition. Not identification.

Nice try - you wouldn't be trying to spread alarm now would you, on an immigration related topic? Quite unlike you!

Ominous, it suggests some fake stamps to be found!

Yep, nothing like upsetting immigration guys for some stupid power kick on your part, the smart thing would be to at least stop and ask why, that's unless you have something to hide.

Sorry, but immigration do not randomly stop people to ask if they can take a photo.

Definitely. Testing their facial recognition systems.

The world is going mad. Do we really need facial recognition 🤔

Not sure, the CCTV systems were supposed to be the answer to crime. They may aid prosecution, but it is not as if we have less of it yet!

Yes they do and you know this I assume.  You just arrive in Thailand?

I would just let them take their pic vs possibly creating an issue.  Life is too short to get bent about this type of situation or you could just scurry away if that is your style.

Seems they do if you believe what has been posted.

I have just popped down to 7/11 at my condo complex in Naklua and coming out I was met by 2 gentlemen from Immigration; wearing smart new jackets with Immigtation badges; who wanted to take my photo. I asked why and was told "new system" and that my photo would be sent to their boss at Soi 5 in Jomtien. They did not request my name nor did they ask for ID. They did ask how long I had been here and I told them (9 years). They showed me photos they had already taken of other people: farangs as well as some Asian types. I consented to them taking my photo.

Has anyone else had this experience recently and does anyone know the whys and wherefores of this apparent "new system"?

Also, maybe consider this a heads up should you happen to meet my new friends or some of their colleagues.

They're gonna use your photo for some fake passports and ID scams 😄

You should've at least ask them for 500 baht for the photo. Whenever anyone goes to Immigration to get anything done, they all want money. Even for supposed free things like Certificate of Residency.
