EHang, a Chinese drone company, has initiated Thailand's first flying taxi trials in Bangkok through the Advanced Air Mobility Sandbox Initiative. This development marks a significant step towards urban air transport in Southeast Asia. The initiative, in partnership with Thailand's Civil Aviation Authority and local firms, allows live trials of EHang's EH216-S aircraft under a special regulatory framework.

Launching in Bangkok, these trials are set to extend to other popular areas such as Pattaya and Phuket. The sandbox zones serve as practical test environments to refine technology, safety protocols, and integration with unmanned traffic systems. During the launch, the EH216-S completed several autonomous flights, garnering positive responses from Thailand's Ministry of Transport, CAAT, and partners including Bangkok Airways and China Harbour Engineering Company.

EHang's CFO, Conor Yang, expressed hopes that this sandbox model will serve other Southeast Asian markets. The initiative aims to establish a sustainable framework for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) across the region. According to CAAT's Director General, Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon, Thailand is leading in developing safe, commercial eVTOL services.

The Ministry of Transport highlighted that this project aligns with Thailand's carbon neutrality and smart city goals. Deputy Permanent Secretary Panya Chupanit noted that AAM supports modern transport solutions. These trials build on EHang’s previous human-carrying flight in Bangkok last November, showcasing Thailand’s ambition in urban air mobility.

Key Takeaways

  • EHang launches Thailand’s first AAM trials with the CAAT.
  • Trials plan to expand to key tourism destinations for broader testing.
  • Thailand aims to lead Southeast Asia in safe, commercial eVTOL services.
