Why your beef, bananas and coffee beans have gotten so expensive

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

The main reason beef has become painfully expensive comes down to economics and climate: As global temperatures rise, shrinking cattle herds are straining the nation's beef supply even as demand remains strong...

The Trump administration this year has imposed new tariffs on several major coffee producers that export to the U.S. That includes a 50% levy on Brazil, a 10% tariff on Colombia and a 20% tax on Vietnam. In Brazil, that has led producers to withhold shipments as they negotiate with American roasters over who will absorb the added costs, throttling supplies in the U.S., according to investment bank UBS.

Basically, the 2 main reasons are climate change and tariffs.

But we all know that keeping the panic alight and spreading paranoia is very good...very good for selling arms and making Nations forget how bad their own leaders are like all over Europe or America.

Actually, coffee and beef (not sure about bananas) have become more expensive around the world, so, yes, mostly climate change (and less supply)...

Coffee is Thai grown, Chumphon, roasted at Krung Thep, and price has been the same all year.  Slight, <10 % increase last year.   Beef is AU import, and didn't notice any major price increase, though can actually check this year's receipts, as we save them.

Bananas come out of the garden, but when bough O&A, think normal pricing.  Get back to y'all on the beef :coffee1:

Local beans are relatively stable in pricing. But just to mention that Coffee from the South is mostly bitter Robusta. The good Arabica is mostly grown in the North.

Thai arabica coffee that I order from Hillkoff has recently risen from 260 to 310. About 20%.

Olive oil exploded worldwide due to bad harvests.

Cocoa same and my favourite chocolate almost doubled since 2011.

Coffee, like oil, is a commodity. Absent tariffs and other trade restrictions, its price depends on the world market prices.

The same would go for beef.

The logistics involved in shipping bananas to where the demand is, probably precludes that trade.

Well, Vietnam grows mostly robusta and the price for its coffee beans has escalated sharply. In fact, this is true for the price of robusta worldwide.

Our is 100% Arabica.  Dark roast to top it off, as not a fan of bitter coffee.

Don't know where you buy your beef, banana and coffee from, where I buy them from, the price is still

the same and very reasonable, what others pay for them around the world is their concern, not mine.

Utter nonsense, there is no proof that global climate has any effect on livestock. Another lame attempt at correlations.

I thought the reason was cow farts 🤔

I just pick up a bunch of bananas from a stall for 20 baht.

And an iced coffee for 25 baht.

If prices keep rising like this I will have cut back.

Beef prices consistent all year, AU Harvey brand (whole pieces) as like cutting my own steaks ...

... sirloin cap ฿799 kg / $24.66 kg USD or $11.21 lb

... Sirloin ฿829 kg / $25,58 kg / $11.63 lb

... tenderloin ฿949 kg / $29.29 / $13.31 lb

Seem to have a serious number problem, Makro (by month) receipts from Nov 2025 to now ...

Talk about ignorance. You post a piece from cbs news and you claim science. You lack any understanding and a shred of knowledge of what science is other than what you pick up from the media, and most certainly you’re unable to decipher a scientific article and break it down objectively in layman terms for the average reader.

OP simply a 'delusional' lefty and just another Trump bash thread.  Which doesn't affect us in TH, unless you buy USA product, (why would you),  if even from the USA, as most outsourced to CN, MY, ID.

I think inflation here, for me, is just CP's price gouging, since purchasing Makro, and simply raising their price to stay just a tad under the other chains they own.  That margin has gotten smaller & smaller.

Monopolies suck ... 🤬  :cheesy:

Some replies turned it into 'world pricing', blaming climate change :cheesy:

Trump and climate change ... just excuses for price gouging.  My only concern is whole foods, as avoid processed as much as possible, and that sort of stays steady in TH, as too much competition from fresh markets, so CP can't go too crazy.

Actually prefer Makro in that sense, though more expensive, but hopefully quality control is better.

Dry goods & imports, well, we're screwed there.
