Phuket's Kathu-Patong Expressway project is set to transfer from the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) to the Department of Highways (DLT), allowing the road to be toll-free. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, announced this move, which is aimed at reducing costs for the public. The proposal, focusing on a 3.98-kilometre stretch, is ready for Cabinet submission.

The expressway will feature a reduced tunnel diameter from 17 to 10 meters, enhancing safety and cutting costs. With the decrease in tunnel size, the expressway will now have two lanes instead of four, accommodating both cars and motorcycles. These changes will adapt the project better to the local area while maintaining safety and efficiency.

Minister Pipat emphasized the benefits for Phuket residents who will have access to improved infrastructure without toll fees. Though the transfer will eliminate toll charges, it requires further agency discussions, with a decision anticipated next week. The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) will later review these modifications for final approval.

The original study by EXAT will guide the project, targeting Cabinet approval by November 2025, and at the latest, December 2025. Land expropriation is underway, but shifting to the DLT may delay the project by 1.5 to 2 years due to budget reallocations. Despite these changes, construction is planned for 2026, with completion in 2029.

The Kathu-Patong Expressway, designed to connect key areas in Phuket, will stretch from Patong to Kathu, cutting through the Nakkerd mountain range with a 1.85-kilometre tunnel. The project has been in planning for over 20 years and is crucial for easing traffic congestion between these economic hubs.

Key Takeaways

  • The expressway's transfer to the DLT will make it toll-free for the public.
  • Tunnel size reduction improves safety and project adaptability.
  • The project timeline may extend due to budget reallocation.

2029? I bet rather 2129

2-lane tunnel? That'll lead to traffic jams there.
