I moved here in 2001... exchange rate was stable around 40 baht to the buck.

100 baht was $2.50, not around $3.00 now (numbers from countryeconomy.com)

01/19/2001 40.5460 -0.58%
01/18/2001 40.7823 0.69%
01/17/2001 40.5015 -0.68%
01/16/2001 40.7803 -0.57%
01/15/2001 41.0137 -1.23%
01/12/2001 41.5236 0.52%
01/11/2001 41.3089 1.58%

Since year 2007 (for 19 years already), the rate is very stable in the range 30 to 36 per 1 US dollar. The current rate of 32.6 is pretty normal.

calling out a simple demographic observation as "racist" is the real low blow here — he said 70% Indian, 10–20% Chinese tour groups (bright hats, flags = standard package tours, not slurs). That’s fac

Thailand is happily welcoming them all and don't realize that attracting certain demographics, will scare other demographics away.

Hardly the same as your initial claim which was:

Written as fact with nothing rough, approximate or averaged about it, but good effort all the same.

You’re wrong. My initial claim was that the current rate of around 32.5 baht per USD is quite “normal” when you look at the exchange rate history over the past 20 years — not that it (the rate) has never moved outside the 31–35 range.

I will take the Indians any day over Aussie louts and bogans

I've never had a problem with Aussies.

The problem is that Westerners now make up only about 15% of all tourists in Thailand. The time when Thai tourism relied mainly on this group is long gone and will never return.

Pattaya, once the bustling nightlife epicenter of Southeast Asia, is experiencing significant changes in its after-dark scene. While bars and live music still thrive, many long-term foreign visitors note a dramatic shift in the atmosphere and the clientele. On social media, both tourists and residents voice concerns about these changes.

TAT's ambition to bring in huge numbers has back-fired, on the dregs have come, and with it the trouble

I quoted your initial claim and that was not it.

Perhaps English isn't your first language and if so lets put it down to your statement not coming across too well.  However, if it is, then you really need to stop trying to justify your error.

Please, find and read my first post in this thread. You only quoted part of it. Try to disprove my main argument.

I shed no tears for the fat sixty-something westerner sex-pat going extinct in Pattaya. There's no denying the Indian crowd has made the walking street hard to recognize. The problem is simply when one demographic makes others stay away.

Here it is in full.

The Thai baht has been moving in the range of 31–35 per U.S. dollar for the last twenty years, and it’s around 32.5 now. So what’s with all the nonstop whining about the “strong baht”? I’m really tired of reading how it supposedly kills tourism and everything else

I addressed the first sentence which has been proven wrong, although I refrained from calling you a fool as another poster did when posting the data that disproved that sentence.  I'm getting close to it now however.

I actually agree (for various reasons) that to a certain extent that there is excessive whining and your comment on tourism being killed, but again, they were not the points I was addressing.

I'm out of here now unless it's with an emoji or two as I think we're going in circles.

I wonder what effect it'll have for all the hookers and their families?

It'll be back to minimum wage for them, lol

I did a few days in Pattaya two weeks ago. Spent one night doing Walking Street. I'd say roughly 70% Indian, 10-20% Chinese (you can tell by the way they wear the same brightly colored hats following a flag carried by a guide). Cut that night short.

Has been like this for a least 10 to 15 years. 10 years ago it would have been 70 % Chinese and 20 % Indian.

You would think that this would bring down the rates for sex services. The opposite has happened.

Disproving specific sentences while ignoring the main argument is nothing but a demagogical tactic. I need to repeat: my main point was that the current rate is fairly “normal” from a historical perspective. The average yearly rates from 2007 to 2025 that I cited sufficiently support this claim. Now, leave me alone, please.

Will people still payforplay as much in 20 years?

Doubt it, most people will have sex with supersexy Androids. They don't have sagging boobs and stretchmarks.

I avoid walking street now days, over priced compared to what it once was. If you want to avoid the Indian/Chinese crowds try the bars around soi buakua LK Metro area or Treetown.

Quite so. I've avoided WS for some years now, except for 1 or 2 visits in a 2 month trip, or on my way to the Bamboo Bar 😊

Worth noting, WS is not Pattaya in its entirety, never really was but the journalists imply that it is.

The areas you mention and a few others are very different and all within a 10 Baht ride from WS.

Not a single thing he said was racist. He made an observation that he mainly saw Indians and Chinese, which of you have been to pattaya recently is 100% correct

You must not own a business in Thailand then. Indians spend next to nothing (except on straws) chinese stick to chinese owned businesses and do not contribute to the thai economy. The indians and arabs have ruined walking street. Got their own nightclubs where white farangs are not welcome. So who’s being racist now.
