Walk ins for 5 year DL renewal? Renew different province?

Featured Replies

Hi,  I was wondering if anyone knows if you can walk in without an appointment for a 5 year DL renewal?  I also would like to know if I can renew my DL in another district or province from where I live (from where my on file address is).  I have heard conflicting information for both questions and am trying to get a definitive answer (or close to it ) before I spend an entire day (or two) embarking on this adventure.

The main obstacle is that I have already gotten a COR and it will expire before I can get an appointment in Bangkok.  I also want to travel out of country soon and will need it for moto rental in another ASEAN country.  Many thanks for all and any help.

You  can get a renewal in other provinces. You will need the COR and the online test confirmation plus probably a doctors certificate. Walk in is very difficult as most provinces have a queue system. I did my last one in an Isaan province because the queue was too long in Bangkok. It took quite some time to talk to the staff because in the beginning I was told to get a queue with a Thai ID. Luckily I was able to do the physical test within an hour or so and got my extension.

I resorted to using an agent.

I think with your time pressures you will need to do the same.

Thanks for your reply.  What did they mean by" get a queue with a Thai ID".  Do you mean they told you to get a queue with a Pink ID?  I didn't know there was an option.  It just says foreigner on the queue system, as far as I can tell.

Also, when you say a walk in is difficult, do you know if there is a policy where no walk ins are not accepted?  I do realize nothing is uniform in TH, so probably no policy.

You have to consider that not in all Thai provinces government agencies are prepared to service foreigners because there are not so many around there. In this case  the queue system did accept only Thai ID cards and staff asked about a Thai wife or girlfriend to get into the queue system instead of me. There was no walk in system in place.

Just did my DL renewal 2 week back. My office Rong Kuang (Phrae) does not need a qeue.   Walked  in 10:10 got out by 10:30 with a new DL for 6 years(minus two days to be honest) Other offices might have a qeue system?

brought:

-copy passport , relevant pages

- Medical

-COR

- QR code for the instruction and question on training (website DLT)

- Baht 515.

Last time (6months ago) I renewed my 5 year in Chon Buri.  Hired the owner of a driving school to handle it.  I still had to be there at DMV donating my signature but otherwise nothing to do.  It took less than one hour versus around 4 or 5 hrs if you DIY.  Paid her 1500.  Good value.

In other words, an under the table deal....

I guess DMV has also stolen a picture of you, and exposing  it on your new DL? (or is the owner of a driving shools face on it?)

The wife and I both walked in without an appointment last month to renew our licenses.  This was in Ratchaburi.  Only waited about 15 minutes to do the vision tests.  They were doing them in groups of about 10 people.

I do mine in Chonburi and it has never taken anywhere near that length of time. Previously they never  had anywhere to do the movie so fairly quick, but last time I went the new building had been completed and I had to watch the movie for the first time, but overall took less than 2  hours.

If I remember right foreigners couldn't book online and had to phone up or go and make an appointment. When I went it was late morning and she asked if I wanted to come back at 2pm for the movie or another time. They have facilities in the yard so just waited, finished before 4pm, think they shut then. Better to go there in the afternoon, a lot less people.

Not sure if at that time there even was an app or not. It was several years ago. And can you choose a far away province within the app?

yeh it's handy that you can view the availibility in each province. Phuket for example was booked out until feb next year last time I checked but other provinces you can book an appointment for next week.

That being said you can still try your luck walking in as long as you have the QR to say you watched the video in another seperate app.
